Re: Off Topic: AT 6 contract

Corrupt, whatever. It goes way back when the Convair B36 was chosen over Jack Northrops flying wing due to politics.I'm sure we can all name a few military contracts that were given not because they were the best but because of politics. At the rate our country is going I wouldn't be surprised if our soap box derby racers will be built in China. Last comment on this subject.

Re: Off Topic: AT 6 contract

The Super Tucano has a listed payload/useful load more than twice that of the T6.. Dunno if that's the criteria the AF might have used, but these airframes are quite different. If the AF said they needed an aircraft with at least 3000lbs useful load, the HB product would have been a non-starter. Some might suggest/infer that the spec was written to have such a high useful load just to exclude the HB aircraft, but that's silly. Some people are silly though.

Both the Swiss design and the Brazilian design are lovely aircraft which I would be happy to fly.

Re: Off Topic: AT 6 contract

The problem that I see with buying from foreign vendors, is that over time we will lose the talent, infrastructure and the ability to produce them in the future. One airplane contract won't do that, but when you cancel the purchase of the C130, the F22, this project and who knows what else they have outsourced overseas, demand for creative engineers, talented assembly line workers is lost. Then the politicians stand up and say we need more engineers and jobs for the working man.

Re: Off Topic: AT 6 contract

As previously pointed out, the AT-6B met or exceeded all requirements of the LAAR contract, including a useful load of 3,350 lbs.

Comparing the Super Tucano to the AT-6B is where you must start, not the T-6A or T-6B, in order to be comparing apples to apples.

Looking in to this further, turns out these planes aren't for the USAF, but intended for the Afghan air force. For a country that makes the stone age look modern, why are we spending 350 million to buy them 20 state of the art planes? How bout we send them 50 yak 52's and a couple of container of spares and keep the other $348 million?

Why dont the afghans spend some of the billions we give them on their own darn airplanes?

That's what my dad said but I think he was entertaining the possibility that he would be needed to show them how to get the most out of it.

Could it just be that Beech is making an inferior product...the same reason why every other company missed out on contracts.

FWIW, AT-6's are made overseas anyways. They are assembled in the US, but the parts are made by Pilatus is Switzerland.

Furthermore, the President has little to no say in what weapons are used in any branch of the military.

Completely untrue on all counts, especially the parts.
