I was waiting for my friend at the FBO in Merced this morning at 0800 and there was a report of an aircraft down by Castle/Atwater. 5 minutes later over the police scanner at the FBO, it was determined to be a large meteor strike.

Strike? Do you mean it hit the ground near Castle? That would be a rare event indeed!
(It's even more interesting to me because most of my family on my mother's side, from cousins up to my late, great-grandfather live (or once lived) in the Atwater/Merced area. I use to be able to see the lights at Castle AFB at night from my uncle's dairy ranch.

We heard it, though it was a neighbor loading junk in his truck! Did'nt find out until later what it was. Pictures of it from Reno on the news, if only we had looked up!Comment

I didn't hear it, but a couple of guys in the shop were talking about it this morning in Phoenix.
I think I was dozing at the time. Sunday starts late for me.
