I met Mr. Hoover who I'm sure would rather be called Bob, in the 80's at Madera. He had just finished his dead stick landing coasting up in front of the crowd. My dad and I walked out there and he had just opened the door to the Commander. He talked to us for 15 or 20 minutes just like he had known us for years. A class act. On a lighter not so light note. I also watched him taxi Old Yeller into a black pick up at Reno a few years later.
Something I blamed on the guy in the pickup. It should not have been on the ramp during the start of a race.
I'd still ride with him.
