    Re: 1941 the Movie

I believe his father was a crew members on B-25's of which Steven was very proud of. I heard him talk about it one time. Might have been a B-17 I don't remember for sure. At one time he had a project in the works to remake the Spirit of St Louis.......but something happened, and it fell thru...........would be hard to improve on Jimmy Stewart...........kinda like the remake of Flight of the Phoenix..........can't improve on Jimmy Stewart.

      Re: 1941 the Movie

I'm not trying to start a political fight here, and I'm not necessarily saying you are wrong, but I'm just curious why somebody like Spielberg, who "disrespects our military" would agree to do "Band of Brothers" - a movie which paints a very positive picture of our W.W.II Veterans and "Saving Private Ryan". Next year Spielberg will also release "The Pacific" - a mini-series equivalent to BOB, but set in the Pacific Theater of W.W. II. If he really hated our military that much, don't you think he would do movies that showed the bad side of our nation, like anything from Viet Nam, ala' Oliver Stone?
      Since you asked ...

I maintain that "1941" is more typical of Spielberg's attitude toward the US and our military. It predates by several years the media's yet ongoing fashion of conspicuously honoring "the greatest generation". "Band of Brothers" is just an example of Spielberg toeing that line; he's nothing if not slavishly politically fasionable.

WWII was a triumph over a socialist opposing force which the left have succeed in mislabeling as "far-right". Since it's the media's wont to dishonestly associate the Nazis with anyone on the political right, it's safe and convenient for them to approve of that war.

Spielberg is a talented storyteller as opposed to whatever the hell Oliver Stone is in fact. Each has his own calculus for making movies, turning out flicks like either "Saving Private Ryan" or agitprop cartoons like "Platoon". There's no accounting for taste.

I've tried to be succinct in this. Please pardon whatever degree of failure I've achieved here.

      Oh, and

      can't improve on Jimmy Stewart.

        Re: 1941 the Movie

1941 is one of my all time favorite movies, but its such a mashup its hard to call it a specifically anti-war film. I think it's merely laughing at the general hysteria of the times. You can argue whether that is appropriate separately.

Spielberg himself, to my mind, is a brilliant director and a typically messed up left wing liberal Jew. We (meaning us Jewish folks) helped start all the socialism which has swept Russia and Europe for the last 100 years. And for our troubles usually got a bullet in the back of the head. Some people - like Spielberg - never learn from history. If he was smart, he would be a conservative.

This set of opinions are those of one of the 11 conservative Jews living in the Socialist Republic of California. There used to be 13 of us, but my parents escaped to Idaho.
