NAG is planning a meeting Thursday at 5:00 PM, while waiting for the traffic jam out of Stead to diminish.

        Re: First time at Reno

as soon as all the planes are down after sundays race the event is over and stead become a regular airport again. Make sure you walk onto the ramp and take part in the little victory celebration that happens with the gold winner.

Don't be afraid to hang around in the evenings as there is some good stuff that happens after the show, and great lighting for photos.

One of the benefits of staying on sight.

          Re: First time at Reno

I camped on site from 1976 to 2002. Honestly, the only time I went into Reno was when it was absolutely required for supplies. Usually I/we would hang around in the pits until almost dark, or enjoy a cigar and drink back at the camper. When it got dark we would cook, hanger talk a little and by then we were ready for bed so we could be up at 5 am the next day.
Even living here I rarely go into town during race week, just too darn tired!
The thought of sightseeing never crosses my mind as I am busy physically and mentally with the races. My wife doesn't even TRY to have a rational conversation with me...

With everything that will be said about RENO over the next few weeks in mind, if we could figure out a way that would result in this sentence, or a partial reference of it, therin, could be referenced at the first hint of any misunderstandings between best friends for life (read that married best buddies) as, at the very least, a starting point for gaining common ground, we'll all be a lot better off come week's end...

Wifes, GF's, best friends, roomies.. whomever.. if your partner seems to drift outside of normal boundries during these coming weeks, if your partner, wife, GF, best friend, drops everything, runs outside at the slightest sound, mis-identifes a C-150 doing touch and goes, as a warbird on final, or a light twin as a c-130... If your wife, partner, husband, roomie/partner.. WHATEVER, seems a bit off for the next few weeks, Please find within yourselves the bit 'o' kindness which makes us what we are. Deal with the afflicted as they are to be dealt with. The are not ill, or a threat to be dealt with to keep the rest of us healthy. They are, to be sure, afflicted, but their illness is one worthy of all to align with.. AIR RACE FEVOR.. not everyone gets it, not everyone knows what it is which they have.

              See you there tomorrow!!

                      Re: First time at Reno

Want to see the sites ehhhh!

I recommend a trip to Virginia City. One walk down the boarded sidewalks of the main street, and a duck into the Bucket of Blood Casino/Bar, or any of the others....will bring fond memories of the world famous old west mining town.

I highly recommend a leisurely drive around Lake Tahoe....the view of Emerald Bay against the Tahoe Basin is spectacular...

Harrahs car museum... in Reno...if it's still there...

The main little street, (Virginia St?) thru the heart of Reno's gambling District really is spectular at night, and a stroll up and down thru the Casino's is something that should be done at least once...

If you get a chance...Drive east of Reno on highway 80 one hour, and you will see one hundred mile Vistas of Nevada's awesome Desert...

I think there is a couple of places in town where you can rent to fire, a machine gun...if that kind of thing...trips your trigger...Check the phone book in the hotel room...

How about an all day drive/adventure down hiway US 395 to Mono Lake...awesome scenery...

How about a day trip up/down hiway 70 thru the Feather River Canyon...Awesome scenery...

If you get to South Shore Lake Tahoe...take the "tram" at Heavenly Ski resort, up to the Restaraunt...the view of Lake Tahoe from there is second to none!

And if none of that does it for you...Vegas is a short shuttle flight down the road...The great Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon are only a car ride away from there....

                        Re: First time at Reno

                        Ditto!
With just a couple of exceptions. What is left of the Harrah's car collection is now the National Automobile Museum and just a couple of blocks from the heart of downtown. Not as spectacular as when it was run by Harrah's but still awesome.
The stroll through the downtown gambling district is a little dimmer than it used to be. Redevelopment and the economy has closed a lot of the smaller casino's and hotels and their signs. Several of the larger casino's have gone condo (or will) and cut down the glitz even further. it's still cool if a new experience.
There are always lots of shows going on around town, especially during events. a quick search and you can buy tickets on-line.

                          Re: First time at Reno

                          Basically (no particular order):
                          1* Bring cash!
2* Bring hat, sunglasses, sunblock, a jacket and gloves.
3* Make dinner reservations or plans in advance.
4* Limit group dinners to 6-ish for better service. (many places won't split a bill. See item #1).
5* Buy memorabilia on 1st day (stock runs out).
6* Hydrate early and eat early or late to avoid crowds.
7* Pace yourself... it can be a long weekend.
