I read his biography about two years ago. A brilliant, but complex man. I'm still trying to figure out the OODA loop.

I think it was a combination of sustained g's and no anti-g training like that taught to our military pilots.

Even with a high bank, I can't see how you could sustain much more than 2 G's, certainly not lateraly. So these drivers must be blacking-out in elevators....

          Here's a quick link...I remember this...well...sort of...

Scary when you think about what could have been...

Good question though...makes me wonder how the X-29 might handle around the pylons?

Interesting, thanks for the link Lonnie.

At speed (180mph+) an F-1 car produces close to 5000lbs down force. Sometimes if you watch a F-1 race they will display G loads, and under braking into a corner they can produce close to 6g's. Sounds unbelievable actually.

                Couple notes:

                1) Forward swept wings does nothing for increasing an airplane's ability to initiate G (e.g. get on the G quickly) or sustain that G. The forward sweep simply builds in aerodynamic INstability that allows faster rolling and pitching.

                2) Excess Thrust is an overall factor that takes into account all aspects of the airplane (weight, drag, etc) and compares it with how much thrust is available. The thrust that is left over after you subtract all that drag is EXCESS thrust....hence the name.

I expect if we dig back into ancient AF history..... The Hi-Mat would probably go fastest. Of course, its unmanned because at 16+G your tosies tend to explode in your boots...

                  Try this one on:

BD-10 (no a/b, meets min weight req.)

With the stiffened rudders (to help avoid death).

Light (-er than a Buckeye, or L-39), and fast...

Thanks Randy, I thought it did but wasn't sure.

Interesting how an aircraft like the F-104 Red Baron could have lots more "Excess" Thrust than some of the latest military jets with lots more total thrust.

                      Nice way of saying it....

Like the aircraft concept, anyone know what happened with it, any still flying, many produced?

Vstabs broke off. Killed test pilot. Project ended. That's the last I heard. The accident report is quite thorough and more incriminating than your average NTSB report.
