The Hughes Racer can not win the Rolls-Royce Trophy based on the requirements put forth by Rolls-Royce. According to those rules the main killer for the Racer would be that the contestant aircraft has to be at least 40 years old. If this rule wasn't in place I would sure like to think that Delmar would have entered the R-2 the first year of the contest when Race 57 won the award.
Remember this as well. The two years that the judging has taken place at Reno, Corsairs have won it both times. Perhaps we'll get lucky and see a third take it in 2002.

Actually, there have been three years of judging.. though last year's sort of slid by the wayside, Steven Cowell won with his "Tuskegee T-6" last year.
It would be nice if the rules for the Heritage Cup could be changed to accomodate the rising number of classic reproductions coming along at this time. Perhaps a slightly different class for repros.. Certainly, the quality of these airplanes deserve a chance at the trophy.

A post script to this by edit: The Rolls Invitational are currently making a decision whether or not the airplane would be eligible to compete in the cup.. however, if this is deemed outside the rules (after all, many of the airplanes that are elegible are 99% or 99.999% recreations after all, with the dataplate being the major requirement that an airplane is a restoration rather than a recreation)... back to the however... The airplane would very likely be invited to compete in the "People's Choice Award" if not in the full competition... So.. With all that said, let's all cross our fingers and pray that Jim and the team are able to have the airplane ready. That the appearance of this craft will make Reno '02 something special is an understatement. Particularly when you look at the cooincidence of cronology that puts the record setting date anniversary on the second day of the Reno National Championship Air Races.. September 13, 1935... September 13, 2002.. How fitting and exciting that this *might* take place!!
