Re: Fastest Mil-Spec Stocker Piston Warbirds at Reno Altitude?

Ok, just to be clear - the 'critical altitude' for this thread topic is Reno race height ~8,000ft..

Anyone ever seen any USAAF Air Materiel Command/Wright Field test graphs for that XP-72?
..I ask, since it is known that some Manufacturers figures could be, ah, 'rubbery', or 'projected performance'..

P-38J on 150 grade gas & 70in boost [on shortened Allison TBO - no room for ADI] made ~380mph @ 8,000ft..

What's your [-or the official] Reno race altitude I.C.A.N. equivalence figure, then?

Reno Stead is just over 5000 feet. At standard barometric pressure and temps in the upper 80s, the density altitude will be right at 8000 feet.

By `45 the German 190D & 109K with their V 12s running ADI on 1.8 ata boost were good for ~400mph at 8,000ft..

The Soviet La 7 was capable of similar speeds, significantly faster than the Yaks..
..its ASh radial being more powerful than the Klimov V12s..

Interestingly, at Reno race heights - the fastest Allison powered P-51 was good for ~400mph..

                                Best P-40 speed came from the XP-40Q.. a creditable 395mph @ 8,000ft - pumping 75in/3,000rpm..
