Amen! Both Hollywood and the gaming industry get better every day at making violent "theater" look more and more real... They show the utter, orgasmic joy of the killer when he mows down a row of "bad guys"... or whatever they are shooting at in whatever Pornographic Violence they are making....

And there again lies part of the problem. The movie and gaming industries have no sense of good vs evil behavior, and typically glorify the latter. They glorify criminals and criminal behavior, tell you that entertainment is good for society, but that their violent junk can't possibly be having a negative effect on young, impressionable, and disenfranchised youth. No doubt government regulation will cure all. Look what it did for Stalinist Russia. The murder rate, not counting the government itself, was pretty low in those days.

Problem there is, those people were scared $hitless by their government...

But, if not government regulations to bring us back to earth.... whom else would you suggest regulate the industry? They pretty much govern themselves now, they make the crap, we can't get enough of it..

I really don't get why everyone is so totally anti-government regulation these days... Wanna know what it'd be like living somewhere where there is little government control, look at the impoverished country's in places like Africa... Bad guys won't even let food through to the refugees...

I see your point, but, I think it falls short of offering a solution.....

These recent shootings and the copycats this past weekend are a symptom of much deeper issues in this country. Is it the constant stream of violence, the lack of strong morals and guidance in upbringing? I don't know but something big and evil is awakening.
There is nothing illegal about owning an automatic weapon. I have one, as do many others.

But I completely agree with everything else you said.

Wayne, my point is simply this; murder is illegal, and yet the body of government regulations against it has done nothing to curb people who wish to commit murder. Government regulation only makes previously honest actions illegal, it never stops criminal actions from taking place.

The scum who committed this crime had already broken a slough of government regulations long before pulling the trigger.

In terms of a solution, that's simple. Give children two parents, and a moral compass. Vote with your dollars by withholding them from the purveyors of violent "entertainment" (I'm thinking gaming and Hollywood). Dump the teacher's unions and teach kids reading, writing, and arithmetic. Encourage the promotion of trade schools, and reduce the pressure to get a college degree. Not saying I have any problem with college, it's just that there are a lot of folks who are not served by racking up debt chasing a worthless scrap of paper in ethnic studies.

In other words, let's start moving back toward a society which worked pretty darn well for a long time.

True. I always felt the hassle and tax made it impractical for all but a serious hobbiest, a person that generally would not be a threat. My bad!
BUT if I needed one for evil-doing, they are fairly readily available on the street.

In WA we have to have a Class III destructive weapons license but in Idaho, yes, you just need to comply with the firearms act of 1934, IIRC.

Saw an ad in a suppliment in todays paper.....a Walmart ad.
I made out an e-mail with a pic of this xbox game and sent it to my friends. These people would be in prison if they tried to market this crap in the 1950s....

Our sick society….I wonder why our youth is so violent?
2012’s top games, according to Walmart
Xbox 360 game, Hitman: Absolution On sale at Walmart. $39.96
Much strong, bloody gore. The game is centered around graphic violence
The overall storyline of an abducted fourteen year old girl may be upsetting to some viewers. Much gore, so definitely not a game for the faint-hearted. One scene in particular in which a nun is accidentally killed is very shocking, especially when one character appears to be cheerful about it.
Many sexual themes throughout the main course of the game. A woman is shown fully naked whilst showering, she is later shot and shown laying on the floor.
A scenario in which a group of assassins disguised as nuns appear, clothed in skin-tight PVC outfits. One character is seen participating in sadomasochistic acts with a unknown female…

Re: Gun Control? Would it do any good?

Lets see how many Hollywood types come out for "gun control" now. But if you say how about a little control on what they are putting on the big and little screen, then it becomes freedom of expression.

Hate to say it but I fear we're too far down the road for that to happen. The values that were in place when I grew up, you grew up... all different now.

But I agree with you, the problem is us... how to fix us?

Automatic weapons are legal in about 50% of the states.

I dont think we have the courage as a nation/cultural to do the things that must be done. We are too big and fragmented now. But this is rather interesting...
In Sweden, Finland and Norway, children under 12 were banned from seeing the film (Spielburg's ET) because of the "portrayal of adults as the enemies of children." So, In 1982, at least, three countries agreed on protecting children from what they thought was a wrong message.
Now, in this country, we cant agree if rap music about cop killing is bad.
In Thialand and Israel, I am told, the teachers have to be armed. But they are a much smaller, homogenous societies than we are. I dont think that would fly here.
Sorry, but I am not optomistic here about where this country is going. And I am not optomistic about any hope to stop the trainwreck. Even in Norway, they have mass killings (77 in one instance in 2011).

Wow, I didn't realize so many states restricted them. I figured just the usual suspects.

I have one question about this shooting.
Why did the mother of a mentally ill child not have her guns locked up in a case that she only knew the combination of? I suppose its easier to blame evil guns instead of blaming the mother for being lazy/stupid or cheap. Think some education would help? Nothing like taking a lil bit of responsibility for ones actions. Want a gun? Buy a dam safe!
How many deaths a year could be prevented by using a gun safe?
I keep my rifles locked up, I have a hand gun (1911) in an inexpensive pistol safe that has a biometric lock. I can get to it very quick yet nobody else can.

I can open any gun safe in 1 hour. By all means keep them locked up, but dont act like that would solve the problem.
