In the pacific I have seen pictures of pilots flying in shirtsleeves and shorts.
In the ETO I know one of the P-38's issues was pilot comfort, lousy heaters and no engine heat meant frostbite.
Even without that 12 cylinder heater out front a cockpit can get hot. I've seen 120 degrees in sailplanes on a good, warm day.
