That was the airframe that Frank Taylor took out of the Harrah's Car Collection. He was stripping it down for a rebuild at the time. Ended up going overseas to the Doug Arnold Collection for a few years and then coming back to Evergreen. I believe it has now been purchased and part of the Collings Foundation museum in Stowe. When would this shot have been taken? It was a nice looking airplane...

Reno 82' was rainy and chilly, and as Brad shows, it had a tough twist for Dan. At the start of the Silver heat on Saturday, Dan was fast, going hard to bump up into the Gold. He was leaving the all-Mustang field in the dust and was way ahead by the beginning of the first lap. But RR's race motor blew pretty comprehensively as he rounded the initial pylons.

He maydayed and pulled up high over the course with some amount of fire around the engine and other problems. He wanted to put the airplane down on One-Four but was unable to make the runway and chose to try to set RR down on a dirt road. Soon after he touched down the airplane swerved and this was the result. Dan was fine fortunately. Ridge Runner was not.

This is what it looked like shortly after the race finished. (John Tegler photo)

Great photo. There were not a lot of straight pieces of metal after that.

Dan rebuilt the airplane pretty quickly, but did not return to racing for many years. When he did come back in the late 1990s, he came back with purpose -- the first real airframe modifications as well as serious engines. He went fast.

        • Which eventually, years later still, led to Dan going Bear hunting...

          • Ah, 2005. the lone Mustang against all those radials. If it wouldn't have broke I think he could have beaten the Bearcat that year.

            • This is Dan before the Gold Race in 1997. Photo by Birgitta -- she was really good at this picture taking thing.

So Dan has not raced for 15 years at this point. I suspect that he thought about Reno a lot during those 15 years.
