  • Sometimes a Corsair needs a bitchin backdrop...

This one's got a Bearcat in it as well. Nope, not Reno, but I'm a little lacking in Corsair pics from Reno. That said, the All Coast Super Corsair was a very good looking bird and much better looking than a stock Corsair.

    • I still say all the Corsairs are cool, including the F4U-1 Bird Cage Vulture's Row Aviation is restoring. That's gonna be terrific! I wish you guys could hear what Howard said about the bird. He loved his Corsair and raced it before he raced the F8F-1 or the Sea Fury.

Now... this Corsair is not Howard's Corsair... Which racer is it? And who flew it? Hint: It's an FG-1D... (Walt Olrich Collection photo)

          • Yes, Howard did start out in one of his Corsairs, before getting into better looking airplanes like the Wildcat. This was at Homestead, in 1979. Howard had a good time...

            • This was actually a very good looking and very impressive bird, if you ignore the fact of it being a Corsair...

              • Kudos MRE. That is indeed Mitchem in Big Hummer. I chose a photo that didn't fully reveal the airplane's race number to make this a bit more challenging but you guys always come through.

Neal, those are wonderful shots of Howard, particularly the first image. Tell me... how could you bring yourself to photograph such an ugly duckling? Did you have to replace your Nikon's lens due to it cracking after snapping these images of Howard's bird?

Well Jan, sometimes you just have to suck it up and shoot. If you are gonna pretend to be a pro, you need to get it all.

Regarding the Nikon gear -- This is why the pros go with Nikon. This gear really stands up to stress and just keeps on clicking.

                        • Gentlemen,

I said it once and I'll say it again...thanks from the bottom of my heart. This thread just keeps getting better and the banter about the Corsair (sorry Neal, but I'm on Team Jan with this one) is only icing on the cake! Seriously, as someone who has loved Reno for as long as I can remember, but whose circumstances never allowed for deep involvement (or even in-person attendance until the 90's,) your generosity with your photos and, more importantly, your memories is not taken for granted.

                          Be well,

                          James

What happened to Old Blue after Bob plundered everything from the firewall forward for what became Czechmate?

I have to say, a spinner on a Corsair just makes the plane look so much better. Without one they look very, well, unfinished. That said, as a military fighter, they look fine, but when it comes to going fast, they look like they are missing something without the spinner.

                            • I really liked Bob Yancey. He was this big rangy country ag pilot who REALLY loved to race. Had a beautiful wife, too. Great people.

These are from Moose Jaw Saskatchewan in 1984. Bob complained that he had to buy a bunch of navigation gear to go up to Canada. He said that "Ol Blue" knew the way to Reno with no problems, but got confused when pointed North...

People do like to fly the Corsair, but it can be a two handed affair when pushed. Big ol' Bob , in short sleeve shirt and headphones only, has a pretty serious hold on the big racer.
