This photo of the "Ghost" is from Oshkosh some time in the 1980's, can anyone guess which year?

Here's a picture just as that paint scheme was going on. This was taken Wednesday morning of Reno '84. They'd spent all night putting the 'old' Miss Candace/Jeannie canopy and turtledeck on, as well as replacing the tail from the incident the day before when the 'new' equipment departed the aircraft and tore up the vertical stabilizer. Somewhere I have pictures taken inside the hangar at about 2:00 in the morning as they were thrashing to make the repairs.

By the end of the week they had outlined the race number in yellow, and put Leeward Air Ranch Special on the wingtips.

...funny thing is I was having trouble remembering the year, since we
attended Oshkosh in '82, '84 & '85 but the photo was in with my '85
pictures.

At the time I had no idea of the history of this race plane, but what
stood out was how severely the wings had been clipped, the tiny canopy,
and the non-stock looking prop. Needless to say we went to Reno the very
next year.

That would be Oshkosh '85....just before they slopped the yellow paint on her and changed it to #9.

84? or was it 85? It was post-Specter and I have a picture of it being towed in as Race 44 right after Leeward brought it back down for some technical issue just after the start of a race. I just saw that picture the other day as a matter of fact. I shot one of him coming in to land just over the end of the runway as well.I'm thinking 85.

Mustang Ghosts can be seen in mirrors but they say you never can seen the shadow of their business end when taxing west in the afternoon.

I'm a little low on " consumables " at the moment Wayne, But as soon as I re-up, a care package will be sent immediatly. LOL

I've seen some pics of you at Reno this year and you look great, truley glad all the crap you've had to endure over the last couple of years is finally coming to an end. Keep moving forward my friend !!

Just to clarify, are we talking about the barely visable race #, or the ghostly face in the center of the number "9". No one has said anything specific.

Okay...call me a geek, but does anyone else see what is cool about this photo? I've looked at it several times in the past, and never 'seen' it.

Sort of lives up to the name.

I second that motion, HAH! Thanks Brad, now I'm going to have to dig out my 83 pictures and see if I can see it there. But, on the other hand, DUDE! Good find! I always like to look at the archives.
