Yeah, I still get very tense when I see that. If there was ever a movie entitled "When Corn Cobbs Go Bad" that should be the opening scene.

The races were stopped down temporarily, but the Governor of AZ was instrumental in having the races continue. It was a horrible day and a happy day combined when we knew Kevin had made it. He was injured, but alive. We lost a valuable plane, but he went on to race again.

Two things about the incident that made it a little easier for me:
1. I didn't realize 'Boys from Chino' built her from extra parts and a corn-cob that was handy, read that, NOT an original F2G!
2. Kevin survived, albeit VERY banged up, but, VERY much alive.
I was standing in the 'blue-loo-cue' when it happened. I was next in line when Kevin was crossing the start-finish pylon and the first white puff came out of the snout. White turned to Black, Black turned to ORANGE!
I couldn't watch, as my heart sank, so went on in and TCB. I came out and saw the plume and was so happy when I saw Kevin under Silk!!!
I have great respect for men that get back on the horse......3!(?) times!!
He really is Relentless!!!

I remember that. The Super Corsair was one of my favorite racers. I think there was a lot of presure to try and make the first Phoenix race a success and let led to the plane being flown when it shouldn't have been. It had just been rebuilt and was making metal before that flight.

What I remember about the incident was the lenght of the flames, the terror when we all realized that the plane was doomed and Kevin needed to get out, the huge relief when we saw that chute and then the gut wrenching sadness as we watched the pilotless plane plunge to it's doom. Knowing there was nothing that could save her. I was also amazed at the shreaking sound as it headed down. I'd heard that sound in countless movies but never realized that planes really sounded like that.

What a day for both ends of the emotional scale!

I also remember the Deja Vu seeing flames like that coming out of the Yak several years ago at Reno. I was with the same friend that I watched the Corsair with and we thought for sure we were in for a repeat. Luckily that ended much better.
