Re: Rare Bear Speed Record Attempt This Year

Maybe we should get the F8F Bearcat #1"Conquest" down from the rafters & have Darryl G. prepare it to race again.

"Could" and "Will" are to very different words. One of them is tethered by reality and money, the other is nothing but speculation and mental masturbation.
I think those masterbating are the Bear homers celebrating the fact that no one's attempting to break the record...I have little doubt both Dago and Strega would break the record if they attempted it....

You're right. Dago and Strega just dont want to hurt the Rare Bear's feelings. Maybe someday when they dont have anything else to do, happen to be in the neighborhood and have a few minutes to spare they will drop by and blow everyone's doors off.

Because its just simply not feeling like doing it that has kept them from doing it in the past right?

You are a crazy person. I like it though. You stick to your guns.

That's different. Conquest wasn't the fastest unlimited in the sky when it was taken out of racing....Dago was...

Maybe they don't have the funds...I know it's not cheap to make these attemps, but I doubt the reason they're not doing it is because they don't think their planes are fast enough...

Re: Rare Bear Speed Record Attempt This Year

...also, why is the 3km record considered to be the ultimate speed record? That's like claiming a car that can go the fastest in the 1/4 mile is the fastest car in the world, even if there are cars that can go faster in say 1/2 mile, or even a mile. The 3km record favors a plane like the Bearcat because of it's massive acceleration. Rare Bear would have a hard time attaining the speeds a Dago or Strega could hit over a longer distance...

I think a scoopless Mustang has some unfinished business at Key Biscayne.

The 3KM "trap" is just the point at which the airplane is timed. The airplane is already at speed, in the air. It's not a drag race.
To your point, the 15KM record is held by a Mustang, Dago Red actually, and the speed is 13 mph slower than the Bearcat's 3KM record. As well, the altitude of the 15KM rule is very liberal and favors the Mustang, and TAS for any airplane, for that matter.
The hard part of the 15KM is that of navigation. David Price attempted the record in Dago Red in the 90's and failed to meet the criteria of a record (did not show image in timing camera) after unofficial times of up to 536 mph. This is what thwarted Shelton's attempt at the 15KM in 1973 with unofficial times of 504mph, too.
Many record attempts end in failure because of the same problems that develop during the races themselves, Greenamyer and Hinton both experienced engine failures before setting their records. Holm in Jeannie, and Sandberg in Tsunami just didn't have the speed even at top power.
The guys that have set the records have done so at great expense, after much planning and preparation, and had a dose of good luck, as well.

Happy you're so enthusiastic, however some of your posts are a bit optimistic for propeller driven, piston powered airplanes under the rules governing the FAI 3KM and 15KM records.

All true, and good points but those records, and record attmepts were made with a condiserably slower Dago....had they made those attempts in the early to mid 2000s when Dago was at her peak, it's likely they would've beaten the existing record by a significant amount...

                                again with the "Considerably".

What constitutes "Considerably" in your book?

                                20mph?
