ITS NOT BROKE.......you cant change it and make it any safer. real issues like a porta potty down where the f1s stage before the race starts, cheaper beer, more acess to the pits , better parking for the fans. Armchair quaterbacks and rocket scientest alike stop trying to reinvent a wheel that rolls just fine, moving forward doesnt mean anything needs to be done different. Alot of you dont know how much goes into the design of the track as well as what we do to the airplanes to keep them safe, risking life in an unsafe airplane just to win a trophy and a little money isnt what we practice.start planning now , not on what to change but on how you are gonna spend the best week of 2012

They all ready have gates that they have to stay within, it's called a Deadline, and breaking the deadlines have penalties. I believe the deadline for the unlimited course is the south side of the main runway on that stretch of the course.

All these discussions are nice but they don't change anything. Everyone should get together & design their own race course & airplanes & they could just fly full scale RC planes in the Desert & we could watch them from a giant screen TV from one of the Casinos with free beer & chips. Just like watching Sunday football & then Monday morning quarterbacking them. Such fun. Go Phil.

F1-69 is correct in that it really isnt broke.....over the years it is a very safe sport for the spectators, except for choking on that home wrecker hot dog.....folks have to realize that they are not victums if they do get hurt...they are willing participants...

As I've said to couple of folks regarding the disclaimer on the tickets, "If you come to an air race, what sort of injury did you think they were talking about, the hot dog stand blowing up?"

See, I knew those damn hot dogs were the real danger! lol

You want to make it safer? Easy, a private highway to and from downtown to the field for air race attendees! Seriously, the drive there and back is riskier than a day in the stands!

My British friends used to also be very afraid of the corn dogs, but as an American and a fan of fried fair food, I think most people accept that risk openly.

Put me on the "I don't thinks its broken" list.

I'm proud to say I've never eaten a corn dog. However, if I were to eat one anywhere it'd be at a Reno concession stand.

That being said, the injured and families of the deceased have been remarkable as far as I know.

In truth, one of my fondest memories is being at the airport shortly after dawn, having spent all night in the hangar while dealing with a busted motor, and eating luke warm hot dogs and drinking luke warm coffee. Breakfast of champions.

I think it is safe to say that more people at Reno are in danger of high cholesterol than an errant airplane. My vote would be for the pulled pork bbq sandwich (but it's sooo good!).

Realistically though, I'm not certain what changes they can consider making until after they get some sort of information from the NTSB.

One of my favorite memories would be, and it happens almost every year, showing up at the beer tent (with a copy of my mortgage and a co-signer) at 8 a.m.. The servers look at me like - "are you serious? this early??" and I have to remind them that it's 11 a.m. where I'm from - now get the loan officer and let me know if and how many beers we can have!

I have been at Reno for the past 25 years, (with exception to 2001). looking over the thread I can only say that 48 years of spectator safety should speak for itself.

Moving the dead line will would not have changed anything, an aircraft moving at nearly 500 mph could impact miles away depending on the circumstances. Unfortunately there are always knee jerk reactions from people that want to "protect the public". Live is fragile and risky, most of us accept risks and do our bast to manage the potential danger and accept it. Whether it's strapping on an airplane, climbing on a motorcycle, attending and air show/race, eating at a hot dog stand or driving to work.

The Reno Air Races should continue as they have been for 48 years, yes we always remember those who have lost their lives doing what they love ( the pilots racing), we should also continue for the those that loved the sport enough to be there in the first place as spectators as well.
