Re: 400 MPH RC JET ~ IMPRESSIVE

I use the Eagle Tree airspeed indicator on my models. It uses a pitot tube and a pressure sensor and only cost $34.

They say that it is accurate up to 300 mph. Probably could ask for a recalibrated one for higher speeds.

With dynamic soaring are they interested in air speed or simply ground speed.

Ground speed is a bit irrelevant when you consider a hot air balloon in the jet stream is going even faster.

All the speeds that they are reporting are ground speeds (via radar). Indicated airspeed would be less as the wind is a significant part of the equation in getting these speeds.

So a hot air balloon in the jet stream somewhere is now going faster than Strega dropping in on the home pylon on a mid-September Sunday!

          Giddy-up!

Speaking of the Jet Stream Paul Mantz,in1947,won the Bendix cross country from Van Nuys,Ca. to Cleveland,Ohio non stop in a P51C @ an average speed of 460.423 MPH by catching the jet stream. Not bad for that day & age.(2648 Miles)

Yes, but if I recall correctly the jet was only 30 to 40 mph. That is typical in the summer. Joe DeBona's 1949 win was at 470 mph in the F6C "Thunderbird".
The winter jets are really quick, many times that at over 140 to 180 mph.

How about this mach 2+ stealth R/C design from Sweden ?

Kind of humbling for the unlimited race plane owner to know a sailplane is going faster than his several million $ + 3000hp ride....
                  An R/C sailplane you mean...?

Wake me up when they brake the sound barrier.

                  ---------------------

And the R/C model previously is not supersonic...the design may well be.

Yes. Think of it as an UAV if you wish.....

Careful calling R/C airplanes UAV's (or sUAS as the case may be).
