"Jet Dogfight..." - Nice! I've always enjoyed the competition shots (2 or more aircraft in one shot), no matter the class. Many thanks, Bucky.

Hey Chris- Many thanks f/your kind note of appreciation. 'Competition shots of 2 or more aircraft oin one shot' are 'elusive' indeed & everyone's-desire to capture when shooting photos of a race out at the pylons (-AND fm the stands or ramp). It's always gratifying when you're in the right place at the right time to get that type of action photo, and actually not 'choking' w/your attempt to make the capture, while using the equipment & dealing w/the all the 'motion physics' & photographic aspects involved.

              "Roaring-Overhead !!!"...

Mon. 9/13/99-Reno NCAR-UNL Qualifying & Practice-W. Chute Guide Pylon: Race pilot-Matt Jackson takes a wild ride around the patch flying Lyle Shelton's mighty Race #77-Rare Bear, while making his second trial-run of the day during the afternoon UNL session. Matt had the dual-familiarization task of getting 'up-to-speed' w/N777L, while also simultaneously-adapting to Stead Field's shortened-Unlimited racecourse @ Reno '99.

Jackson qualified #77 during the next day's first UNL session @ 462+mph, which got 'upped' later that aftn to 468.780-mph by experienced fellow team pilot-John Penney. Failure of an exhaust clamp led to a burnt cylinder-which seemed to open the door & let-in a following ton of gremlin-trouble that beleaguered Team Rare Bear all during race week.

MJ was forced to pull-out of Friday's UNL Heat-2A during the start of Lap 1, when Race 77 suffered a bird-strike, -at the same time two cylinders were suffering fm detonation,-requiring an all-nite thrash by the Bear crew to make the next day's Gold heat. Jackson managed to finish 5 of 6-laps in Saturday's ill-fated HT-3A (when Gary Levitz & MAII were lost on Lap-1) f/6th-place, while flying a very-sick Rare Bear & the racer was a DNS f/Sunday's Gold final,-much to the disgust of Lyle & the entire team. That's part-of~ 'The Highs & Lows of Big-Time Air Racing' sometimes...

WOW, "Roaring Overhead!!!" is pure art. Great angle, great light and what a great sky, too!

                Did I say "Great" enough?

                  Hey Chris~

Re. the RB 'V-O-S' pic- Thanks once again, for posting your compliments on my photograph. V-much-appreciated!

Also worth-noting: that particular shot was a very-challenging capture, (-especially trying to remain somewhat-composed, w/all that triple-blade HP energy 'bearing-down' upon my shooting position so rapidly )

A couple 'Buck Shot' captures of a pair of classic Unlimited Gold Champion Mustangs getting all~ 'stoked-up' ~for racing:

"Wakin'-up The Witch"~Fri. 9/18/09-Reno NCAR: Young race pilot-Steven Hinton, Jr. gets a stack-fire donut while starting-up the Mike Nixon/Vintage V-12s' Rolls-Royce Merlin race engine in Tiger Destefani's P-51D Mustang Unlimited- #7-'Strega' (N71FT), prior to takeoff on another early-morning 'dawn patrol' test flight, in-prep f/the day's Gold competition heat event in the afternoon.

"Fiery Blue Eyes!"~ Fri. 9/16/83-Reno NCAR: John Crocker's potent P-51D- Race #6-'Sumthin' Else' (NX51VC) gets 'wick'd-up' enough to blast-out blue stack flame during a power-test run of her Jack Hovey-prepared race Merlin by the crew, out on the cold Stead Field ramp just after sundown. Note: this is a hand-held Kodachrome 64 slide film shot, taken standing atop a 12-ft. step ladder (-another brilliant photo-comp suggestion fm my late pal-Roger Brower on JC's crew,-seen standing at far-left, next to fellow team mates-Ron York & Ted Curiel.)

RACE: Fri. 9/12/08-Reno NCAR-UNL Gold Heat 2A~ Friday's first UNL heat contest for the Gold contenders every year at Reno is always a much-anticipated event~ when 'The Big Dogs' get to feel each other out a bit by showing a few of their race-strategy cards & in the process-giving air race fans a taste of what might be in store for Sunday's big UNL Gold Championship final.

Here's a good race start capture example fm Outer 4 Pylon, where we see Dan Martin in P-51D #4-Dago Red dueling w/Michael Brown's SF #232-September Fury, w/some hot-pursuit following fm Tiger Destefani in P-51D #7-Strega, John Penney in F8F-2 #77-Rare Bear & Sherm Smoot in Yak #86-Czech Mate.

                            Final results f/this heat were: (1st)-Michael Brown/#232-September Fury @ 469.754-av/mph, (2nd)-Dan Martin/#4-Dago Red @ 464.699, (3rd)-John Penney/#77-Rare Bear @ 462.088, (4th)-Bill 'Tiger' Destefani/#7-Strega @ 446.042, Sherm Smoot/#86-Czech Mate @ 420.933, followed by a really-great Texas Sea Fury duel between Stewart Dawson/#105-Spirit of Texas @ 415.500 (6th) & Nelson Ezell/#13-Fury @ 415.277 (7th).

gotta love that shot. That was the heat when the rudder trim tab departed and shook the airframe bad enough to pop a bunch of filler off the fuselage. We got the rudder off of Ted Contri;s Sizzlin Liz so we could finish the weekend. Dan fell back a bit then pushed on to finish 2nd. Sat. was better.
