              RACE: Saturday's T-6 Bronze Medal (9-19-09) - Middle 5 Pylon

              "TERRIFIC-SIXES" ...

              Some of the highest levels of air racing motorsport competition are regularly seen within the T-6 Class, and not always in a fight for First Place. Here's Jim Thomas flying Race #26-Happy Hour barely in front of Scott Docktor in Race #57-Deuce of Hearts- battling for 6th-Place in the BRONZE Final. Obviously, neither one of them wants to end up in last place!

              THAT'S- GREAT RACIN', Guys!!!

                  ABSOLUTELY BUCKY! Crews never get the appreciation they deserve, so it's great to show them a little love too! THANKS GUYS FOR ALL THAT YOU DO! Unfortunately, the crew in the photos that i attached didn't have to much fun this year, but thanks for the effort! You guys are truly "unsung heroes"! Hope to see you and SoT back next year!

                      You betcha!!! ... How 'bout?-

                      An Air Racin'- UNLIMITED-'Menage-a'-Trois'::

                      It's a well-known fact, that- Grumman F8F Bearcats dominated Unlimited Class Air Racing events during the first decade of the 'Fastest-of-Motorsport's-"Modern Era" (-innaugurated by Bill Stead at Reno '64), until Gunther Balz' #5 Roto-Finish Special P-51D Mustang prevailed to win at Reno '72. That event propelled the Bearcat-vs.-Mustang rivalry to new heights during the years of Unlimited competition that followed. Then- race fans were treated to some truly- 'Epic' Unlimited Gold Championship showdowns between the F8Fs of Darryl Greenamyer & Lyle Shelton & various highly-modified P51 challengers.

                      After Greenamyer retired his long-reigning Bearcat- 'Conquest 1' to the Smithsonian NASM's permanent collection after Reno '75 - it's been Shelton's world speed record holding F8F- #77 Rare Bear (currently-fielded by new owner- Rod Lewis) keeping the Bearcat's winning traditions alive against formidable P-51 champion contenders- most notably the two fastest-Mustangs ever: Tiger Destefani's #7 Strega & #4 Dago Red. Today, the big British Hawker Sea Fury fighter has thrived to become the Mustang's true rival in sheer numbers, to populate the Unlimited Class' ranks, as many predicted years ago, and air race fans love being thrilled watching 3-way domination duels between Bearcats-Mustangs & Sea Furies in Bronze, Silver & Gold Unlimited racing competition!!!

                      Here's a couple- 'Buck Shots', capturing the racing magic of these three classic sexy fighter types- battling against each other around the Reno pylons as- 'Unlimited Dominators':

                      Photo 1. - RACE: Sun. 9/18/94- UNL SILVER- Outer 8 Pylon (L-R): Brian Sanders in Sea Fury #924 leads Tiger Destefani's P-51 #7 Strega (running on a stock ferry Merlin motor) & Howard Pardue in his XF8F-1 #14. Pardue finished first, but cut Pylon 1 on Lap-1 & got bumped back to 3rd-place @ 352.437-av/mph, giving Tiger the win @ 362.347-av/mph & Brian Sanders- 2nd-place @ 355.074-av/mph.

                      Photo 2. - RACE: Sat. 9/19/09- UNL HEAT-3B- Outer 7 Pylon: Howard Pardue's #14 Bearcat leads Ray Dieckman in Sea Fury #71 Sawbones, & Brent Hisey in P-51D #11 Miss America down along the 'V-O-S'. Pardue won @ 395.888-av/mph & Dieckman came in second @ 394.326-av/mph. Hisey's Miss-A came in 4th-place @ 388.912-av/mph in this 6-lap heat, behind Sea Fury- #114 Argonaut, flown by Dennis Sanders (388.912-av/mph).

                      GOTTA LOVE THOSE- '3-WAY DUELS' OUT ON THE UNLIMITED RACE COURSE! OH YEAH!!!

                      DBD

                      P.S. Now that the word is- "Howard's retiring", let's- 'Bring-on The Yaks'!!!
