...to start planning for Reno. This year, I will be flying in Sunday night to take in the whole weeks action. I see on the RARA sight pit passes are needed starting on Wednesday. My question is how is public access to the field and pits handled on Monday and Tuesday?

You can have access to the entire pit area from Saturday thru Tuesday evening - Pit Passes are required on Wednsday Morning.
These days are the best for any Air race fan, All of the Planes are getting ready for the event.
