Couldn't get those links to work Brad...but I do remember that article from when you wrote it....it spoke well of how all of us felt watching helplessly on the ramp as Hurricane Hannah and Sherman put our hearts up in our throats but showed us also some extreme piloting skills.....One thing with racing unlimiteds....you are flying faster than your guardian angels can........

Do you have footage of Smoot when he made that spectacular pull up on fire? VERY dramatic moment as we were all yelling "Pull up and get out!"
        Leo,

From where Speed and I were watching this, (VOS) it really looked like Sherman was getting hot, and decided to end it by diving for the ground!

Man, I'll never forget that feeling of awful dread and then elation on learning he was OK..!

Spoke with Sherman right after while he consumed a large adult beverage... according to him, he'd not left any seat cushion in the AC when he got out. If he WAS wearing any shorts when you saw him, they were probably inside him from the level of suction!

But you are correct, Sherm IS the man!

It's one thing to see all that smoke when someone pulls out. But to see 20-30 feet of flame shooting out you know it can't be good. As I remember he later said basically "Fire? What fire?"

Yep, I got mine and had Mike Brown & Kerch sign it on Monday after the race while we were packing up…… a true treasure never to be opened.

That looks like a Gerald Liang photo - reference the story on WarbirdAeroPress.com.

Yikes... sorry guys but based on above reference, I removed the photo. If ya'll can find out who actually owns it and get permission, we can put it back in..

                          Thanks!

Here are some pics - click the thumbnail for a larger image (opens in new window).

I know I do have some pretty good 'recovery' shots of Czech Mate. I had to twist Kallio's arm, but I drug him along (at a quick trot...pretty good for a couple of old men) clear down to the other end of the field. There were only a couple other 'press' out there. O'Leary from Air Comix was there, and the Sky camera crews were there....and then there was me and Mark. Cool beans. Security was being pretty snotty about people being out there, as I remember. We had to be 'escorted' out to the runway over-run.
I remember it well - including the scolding you gave to those 2 teenagers and the fast talking you did with security about "we are press media" that got us out there. You da man Brad

BTW: Wayne - feel free to grab 'em and add the pics to the article if ya want.
                              Mark K....
