In "The Thunder Factory" by Joshua Stoff on page 107 it states "Flight testing of the XF-84H was limited, but the aircraft's handling characteristics were reported as very good and it was said to have reached a top speed of 670mph, making it the fastest propeller-driven aircraft to date."

Upon further thought and checking a few other references, I agree with you and think the author above in totally incorrect (which make me wrong too). Another source "American Combat Planes: Third Enlarged Edition" by Ray Wagner (page 450) says that the 2 XF-84Hs made only 12 flights and all but one ended in emergency landings. It also states that the aircraft never flew faster than 520mph. So, I'm not sure where the first author got his data.

I shift back to the Bear at an unofficial 575 mph.

I believe one of those planes use to be on a pedestal mount at Bakersfield Airport.......haven't been there for awhile, so not sure if it's still there or not. Anyone else remember seeing it??

As for fastest aircraft, rocket or jet, I thought the record was the X-43, at MACH 10.

You are correct. It is no longer there. It has been moved to WPAFB (Wright-Patterson Air Force Base). Did you ever see it with Santa at the controls?

Re: Fastest speed for a prop driven airplane?

A friend of mine was on the Dago crew at the time of the 15k speed run and told me that they did get one recorded time over the course of 532 mph. They needed at least two by independant timers for it to be an official record. He did say the t-33 was having a hard time keeping up. This was all told to me about 6 or 7 years ago.

Oh man, I think this is the first time I have ever quoted myself.

I believe the quoted records are for manned vehicles. The X-43 has the record for fastest air-breathing combustion engine , but it was an unmanned vehicle.

The fastest rockets would be those that attained enough velocity to escape the Earth's orbit. The Apollo spacecraft would hold the record for manned rockets (somewhere around 25,000 mph, sufficient to get far enough away from the Earth to get captured by the moon's pull).

I'm not sure which unmanned rocket holds the absolute record for max speed under power...Most likely one of the Voyagers or possible the probe we are sending to Pluto.

The fastest man-made object I am aware of would be the probe we dropped on Jupiter. Due to that planet's immense gravity the probe accelerated to a blistering 106,000 mph before it hit the atmosphere!

All those facts (and assumptions) are quoted from memory this time. I'm reclaiming my seat in the Geeks Club...Move over!

My Father was a leed engineer on hypersonic programs at Northrop in the '50's.

Not where the paper came from though.
