Pretty much one of the big questions this year is: who is going to fly the Rare Bear in '06?

    Any bets on "who"??

Did I miss the thread where John Penney retired, fired, or replaced?

John stepped down as the bear driver after he won the gold last year.

It would be great to see Hinton driving anything around the pylons, the Bear included.

I think you'll find that Steve is passed that phase in his life. Quite content doing what he's doing.

I've heard that before, and I completely understand and respect that choice. As a husband and father I personally have no desire to put myself at such risk either. Still, I have a great admiration for his talent and have enjoyed watching him race in the past.

If we were to pick from Sport Class the pilots who have enough Course time and jet time to deal with the speed jump to "Bear Level", I'd look at the three High Rollers: Behel, Turney, and Vandam (this order is alphabetical, not intended as a ranking). For those who do not know the history, please do not even mention that recent Sport Class winner anywhere near Lyle.

Buccarelli is highly qualified and now has more time in the Bear over the last two years than anyone but Lyle and John. No matter who anyone of us thinks would be a good choice, the number one concern has to be the trust and confidence of the aircraft owner. I once had to kick a rider off of my bike during an endurnace race simply because I couldn't trust him to first finish, then finish first. "Go till you blow" is like throwing into triple coverage and hoping for a miracle.

Granted, that's what the front runners' style of every Unlimited Gold race looks like to the crowd (and why going to Reno is like a powerful drug addiction).

Red Bull has no earthly idea what "air racing" is.

You REALLY want to have a long-shot that would/could pay off?

Considering that they (at one time, at least) hated each other's guts, why not put Darryl Greenamyer in the Bear? If anyone has 'more' time in the seat of a Bearcat at Reno, you know????

In hydroplane racing, people thought it would never work when Chip Hanauer signed up to drive the Miss Budweiser for Bernie Little....but in the four seasons that he drove for Bernie, Chip won four straight National Championships and Gold Cups. Can't argue with the success...even though it came at a price.
