Yes, they are going to expand. Something about another tower and an indoor water slide park. That would explain the rate hike. I'm not sure if they have started yet. I don't get to that area very often. I'd say the Nugget is still your best bet (no pun intended).
We stay in town for a lot of minor occasions, or just for playdates. mMy last experience at the Nugget was bad, in the older tower, lots of noise, no air, dirty room.
I've been to Circus Circus several times in this last year and had no problems, in a suite or standard roonM, in either tower. It was quiet (as much as anyplace else I've stayed) clean and tho we too had to do a little "bargaining" the price was good and the comps fair.
The Silver Legacy was the best in the last year, but a little pricey.
To be honest, I wont even go into the Sands anymore. bad area of town (the hookers accost you on the way in) and the ventilaton is horrible!
It all depends on what you want, what you expect, and what you plan on doing after hours.
The nice thing about Circus, Legacy or El Dorado is they are all connected and downtown. Lots to do and lots of options.
How far is Reno from Las Vegas ? Anyone stayed in Vegas while at the races ?
I stayed in Susanville one year. Less than an hour to the front gate unless the CHP has been beefed up on the stretch.
We're RVing it this year. Front gate is right there.
Until this year we have always stayed at the Silver Legacy. Only complaint there is they KNOW it's race week yet they only put one or two people on the check-in counter. Waiting almost an hour to check in SUCKS! (it was better last year - only 20 minutes)
For you RV'ers that want just a little more luxury, there is Bordertown. Just a couple miles north on 395 in Cold Springs Valley they have a campground, gas station, hookups, dump, small casino and a decent restaraunt. You can still see a little of the action in the evenings when they fly out in that direction.
My worst Reno experience was Circus Circus. Overbilled my credit card almost $2K. Took months to resolve it. Had drunks shouting and fighting all night in the room next to me and couldn't sleep. And finally, one word...... Clowns!!
Avoid at all cost!
Although a year ago I saw a great trained dog show there.... I can recomend that! :-)

...and try calling the front desk... gave up on a wake up call, bought an alarm clock instead. They need to staff-up.
They gave the Formula group a pretty good rate, then one of the guy's booked (late), early Sept. and they gave him the "special" 10-days-or-more rate, that was cheaper then our group rate, (most of the Formulas stay for 10 days). GO FIGURE
In there restaurants, the smoking/non-smoking sections are separated by a few hazy molecules of air, cough.
It has a sort of 'hospital' decor, but not the worst place. That would be reserved for the small hotel/motel/lodges, haven't found ONE of then, that my dog would sleep on the mattresses, they must get a deal on them from the brothels
Good hunting.
The unfortunate truth (if you are not a smoker) is that smoking inside most places is legal. There are restaurants and casino areas (Atlantis has a good one) that are smoke free but it is rare. Nevada is not California.
And if you find a comfy bed in ANY hotel, let me know!

But making it illegal takes away the right of the restaurant (or other establishment) to decide have smoking or not. This is America, people and companies have rights.
No harm intended, just making a point.
Actually I agree with you Jarrodeu.
Unfotunate is probably the wrong word there.
This is Nevada, and a lot of what is done here, such as smoking laws, gun laws, etc. are very different from the rest of the country, especially Cali.
No opinion as to right or wrong intended.
Of the random places I've stayed in while at Reno... in rough order...
Hotels...
1. Silver Legacy; very good, but pricey
2. Hilton; good, but can be pricey
3. Fitzgeralds; rooms decent; prices usually decent, but ground floor is so crowded it's work to get to the elevator. Elevators are among the slowest I've seen in a hotel.
4. (I forget the name; I think it started with 'C'; about a block off Virginia street, south of the major hotels; I think it was converted to condos a few years ago); rooms pretty good, other amentities not great
5. Sands; room decent, at least in the tower I was in; area not great.
Motels...
Day's Inn... rooms adequate, but very noisy (right next to freeway)
Travelodge; rooms adequate, but noisy if you're there the same week as the big Harley convention
Econolodge; I hated it. Noisy; water hammer noises late at night, etc.
Super 8 on North Virginia street; decent for a motel, not great
Rachel,
I make reservations for Cascade Warbirds at Circus Circus every year. We have had no problems. I block my rooms early in the year through the Sales office because I use 15 rooms. We stay in non smoking, 2 queen beds per room in one of the towers. Of course the rate is not $40.00. The non-race nights are $49.99 and the price goes up on the week-end. I shared a room with another gal and our costs for eight nights was just under $300.00 each. We like it because we can get to a choice of places to eat w/o driving, and we do walk to other places.
Some of our people put four people to a room to cut expenses, but two to a room is very comfortable.
