  • 1945 Grumman F7F-3P "Tiger Cat"

It's possible we might see two Gruman Tiger Cats in Reno this year!!

It was registered N6178C (Serial number 80483) and owned by Cal-Nat Airways in Grass Valley, California from 1964 to 1966 where it flew as an air tanker for the State of California Foresty Department. From 1969 to 1985 it was owned by the Sis-Q Flying Service in Santa Rosa and flew as tanker number E43. Weeks Air Musuem in Tamiami, Florida purchased the Tiger Cat in 1987 but it was storied in Santa Rosa until they sold it to Lea Aviation of Tampa, Florida in 1988. On November 13, 1988 it was flown to Duxford, UK where it remained until 1993.

In July of 1993 it was purchased by Richard Bertea of Corvallis, Oregon who flew it regularly on the west coast. I remember seeing it on the ramp at the Reno Air Races in 2002. It was painted dark blue and the had the number 14 painted on the fueslage, but I don't think it ever particpated in any races.

It was just recently sold for $950,000. Anyone know who put down close to a million dollars for the Grumman Tiger?
