Re: Are Griffon engined racers the answer?

Could you give me some examples of the crap the RARA has done. I have nothing to compare it to, I'm too young to know Mojave. Reno doesn't have perfect weather either, snow, wind, and so on.

      Hey Jarrod,

I've been there a few times, my Sister inlaw lives there.
They never understand why when ever we visit I always want to run over to the airport, lol.
Last time I was there they were finishing up restoration on a DC-3.

Yea that left a couple of years ago and I think the Bearcat a couple of years before that. About 4 years ago there was a spitfire but I haven't heard anything lately. There was also a Firefly, the same one that was in reno last year. Maybe 2 years ago. I can't remember. Just remembered the airport maybe sold soon. I hate change.

The Firefly won the Rolls-Royce Heritage Trophy at Reno in 2002.

"The airport may be sold soon" To new operators or do they want to build on the land there? It would be sad to loose the airport.
Hope your taking photos of the aircraft there. Your always welcome to post photos on this board.

Why don't they use the Griffon 65 from a Spitfire mk14 is has a two stage superchager and 2035hp! The Spitfire 14 is not that different from the Spitfire 8. Rolls Royce installed it with minimal change in the casing. They may need to install a five bladed propellor.

precious metal's engine has very few mods but produces something in the way of 2500 hp.

five bladed props aren't really a good idea for 2 reasons; 1. they're expensive (especially the prop hub) , 2.with the amount of torque that engine produces the pilot may need to use more aileron to get the plane in an attitude to turn which causes a good deal of drag.

                        Right Matt,

Not to mention it rotates the wrong way a round to effectively circle the course..or are there "right" way rotating griffons too ?

                        rgds,

5000 hp?! At just a little over "flight idle" maybe! The Kuznetsov NK-12 turboprop has nearly 15,000 horsepower (a number that still impresses even after all these years).
