absolutely no age restrictions, of which i am proof >;^)> . all you gotta do to get started in air racing is come to them. most everybody is personable enough.

I'm always amazed at the RC models! Sometimes I think they are harder to fly than the real thing.

Welcome to the board! Got any pix of that mini Strega? Tiger lurks in once in a while, bet he'd like to see it..

You know i've been told that same thing by a few other people and never really believed it till i got to fly a real one. But once you get the hang of everything its like riding a bike

Yeah i have some pics of my Strega and my P-40E that i race also, i will have to scan them and get em up The Strega has been gunned @171 with a lil .120 4 Stroke engine called the YS. And the P-40 has been clocked @147 with the same engine as Strega. That big open cowling seems to slow it down a lil.....lol Here pertty soon i will be building a 60 size Hawker Sea Fury

Thanks for the welcome! i like it here alot seems to be alot of great info and photos on the main page.

You are correct, sir.... Many full scale pilots come into the RC hobby with high expectations of mastering things fairly quickly, and are confounded by how different it is (not necessarily difficult, but different..).

Which is probably a good thing, because if they (the FAA) ever saw how poorly my feable attempt to fly R/C aircaft was, they defintely wouldn't let me near the *real* thing.... (though I still can't help but to wonder the 152 counts as the *real* thing! -- though I am looking at my final Check Ride sometime this month!)

I guess i cant look at it that way since i learned on R/Cs. But when i teache new people to fly i hear it alot or when they go to buy their first air plane they want a taildrager or a bi-plane etc. They never want to start out with a trainer and then work up to the cooler things

There are exceptions of course, but it is probably easier to do it your way...

LOL... I've seen the results of the other way round. There used to be a cable access television show in PDX that was all RC stuff. I saw some pretty neat hardware turned into pulp by pilot error... Of course, the weather was a contributing factor.. and overstressing the airframe.... and and..

I just hope im as good as a real pilot as i am a R/C pilot But i have to say i have seen a few guys buy kits and built em ready to fly then go out and try and fly em on their own and just piss away 800-3k in an air plane Its pertty sad to see it and then they get upset at our sport and some try again and some get pissed and never try again and some will let me/someone else teache them........ guess it depends on how much they think they know or their pride i guess?

                          Different skill for differnt folks

There was a guy in Arizona when I lived down there that loved to build RC craft to exact detail and scale. Spent a lot of time and money to get them just right. As soon as he finished one he would fly it around and burn a tank of gas and then nose dive it into the grass! His passion was building them and I guess he crashed them as a way of moving on to the next project. Some people build, some fly, very few do both as well.

It broke my heart to see...

I was at the Sepulveda flood basin where they had a small R/C airport (Is it still there?) years ago...

This older man had this beautiful B-17...he had worked on it for about 8 years. Every detail, the peeling/chipping paint on the leading edges, the oil stains from the joints, the flak damage...it was so perfect, that if you looked at it through a camera in the right setting, you could not have told the difference between it and a real one. It was truly a work of art and a labor of love.

Here comes Mr. first time R/C helicopter guy with his new machine right out of the box, his kid in tow. He pulls up in his suburban, unloads the helicopter from the box, gasses it up and decides to learn right there how to fly it. He manages to get it up about a foot off the ground and then it accelerates across the field. It picks up speed but no altitude as it whizzes right toward the B-17. The old man ducked for cover as the blades of the helicopter were just above the ground. Before he could do anything, 8 years of time were chopped up like so much ground beef.

It broke my heart as I saw the old man pick up what was left of his artistry piece by piece and put it gently back into his van. He never said a word. Of course Mr. newbie guy went over with his checkbook in hand and offered to pay for the wreckage. The old man looked at him and calmly said, "How can you put a price on 8 years?"

I have no idea what ever happened...we were so shocked by the whole thing, we just had to leave.

It really is truely amazing how much money and time a person can put into an airplane(s) Or any major sport or hobby for that matter. I thought to myself one time just how much i have into one of my Warbirds and from time to money, and it just blew my mind that i have over 1800 into 1 and over 100+ hours And its NOTHING to some of these awesome pieces of art work i see. I know some guys that have up to $15,000 into a Jet or even warbirds half scale P-51s you could almost let a 4 year old fly. And i must say it is an AWESOME feeling to see and fly something you had a part in.

I can only have an idea of how that guy must have felt when he seen that happen it truely is a LOVE like no other!!
