  • One for the old-timers...

Hey, here's one for you trivia-heads to chew on:

In 1966, Chuck Lyford's #8 Mustang took an unfortunate "hiatus" from the Bardahl sponsorship. In the interim, Chuck renamed his racer "Challenger".

Anybody know what the significance of the name was?

Before he got into flying, Chuck was active in 7-liter hydroplane racing. He was quite successful and won the National Championship twice in a boat called "Challenger".

You might say the "Challenger" boat was outfitted with a "mouse motor". It ran a small block chevy with a displacement of 300 cubic inches. The other 7-liter boats ran larger chevy engines (427 Cu In.)

In more recent years Chuck acquired an ocean-going runabout which he also called "Challenger".

I just ran across a picture of Chuck driving the 2-F Challenger last week. Great looking boat.

      Nicely done, by the way.
