For a different perspective, between 2012 and 2018 more than 800 people were injured by foul balls at MLB games. I guess that is not headline worthy.
There is no possible way to ensure a spectator or competitor will not be injured or killed in any motorsports event. It does happen and most of the time it doesn't make the news. Sadly, because Reno is the only event like it in the world, it gets the attention of the press more than other incidents.
Does it suck to have a loss of life at any event? Yes it does. Still, anyone who takes part in it, whether it be as a spectator or competitor knows the possibility is there, even though its low. There is no reason to eliminate Reno. If they do, it sets precedence to eliminate every airshow, or other motorsports event in the country. There are those people who would love to see that happen (for whatever stupid reason.) There are more people who do not wish for that to happen.
Yes there is encroachment on the racecourse at Reno. No, its not going to stop. I do think the venue has more years to give however.

This needs to be looked at as a glass half full scenario. No spectators were killed, there are definitely things that can be addressed to make sure something like this never happens again (there are VERY likely rules/regulations to make sure this doesn't happen again, but no need to discuss until formal report on the cause).
This isn't something that is happening every year. This is the first fatal accident since... 2014? The LiveStream as well as this being on Sunday made it much bigger deal than losing Lee in 2014, but it's no different (other than cause likely). We lost pilots doing what they love with known risk. RARA/FAA/NTSB will look at what needs to be done to keep pilots and spectators safe, and we move forward like we always do. Really no need to be pessimistic on the future of Reno on this platform that is supposed to convince people to attend Reno since it's the best motorsport in the world.
The NTSB has released their initial report on this years accident for those that haven't seen it.
