Re: Corsair Hiding In Old Stead Bear Cave 3-14-2020

Gary has spent a lot of time racing cars but gave that up several ago. His cars still race but I am not sure who is behind the wheel. I don’t think Gary will be racing as he is 72 years old. I think he might have a pilots license as his companies have several airplanes in their fleet.

I just step outside and heard this glorious sound and knew what it was. It spent about 25-30 minutes flying up around the broken clouds. Perfect warm day for that.

Maybe in my next life I will have enough money to buy one :-)

Re: Corsair Hiding In Old Stead Bear Cave 3-14-2020

It was a nice morning, figured after my morning bike ride I would head over to Stead to see what was going on at the hanger.

They had her pulled out and and a private jet pulled up, 6 or so people came out and walked to the Corsair.

I had my external stereo mic and was hoping to capture the sound of a start-up.

No luck, hung around for almost a hour and had to finally leave.

Once home it wasn't but 30 minutes when I heard her fly.

Lot more dropping into the approach pattern and such compared to the previous 2 higher flights.

Here's some notes, the guys with the black binder drove up and after a while he and another went into the jet.

Nothing happened after that, I'm assume he and the pilot where going over the preflight details.

I had to leave before they were done :-(

On the tarmac, everyone was just BS'ing waiting on them.

Over heard one talking about recently flying a P51, another was introduced as the company that owns her.

Even though I missed the start-up, just being around such a classic was precious.

When I heard her fly, its the sound of freedom, WWII style.

I just get all gitty thinking about what that sound projected to the enemy back in the day.

Have to wonder what "that sound" will be that terrifies our next fo??

I think that is, also considering it's a Fighter Rebuilders tee.

The jet is under a different name than the Corsair, but it's still registered in Guerneville so maybe it's Heck's?

Is the guy in the cockpit not Dan Vance..?

Would make sense for Dan to ferry it since they both live in Wine Country.

Dawg do you know if it left?

The man in the black hat was on the line to fly in the 2010 gold race that was canceled due to wind.

There up right now, super nice day, blue sky, and the only sound is a big radial.

They are definitely having fun, they have the sky to themselves.

Like when Rare Bear lived here, always up playing/testing.

Almost thought we were going to have a mayday.

A ways over the house she started popping and sputtering, then they turned west towards the airport and started a decent. After a while she appeared from behind Juniper Ridge getting into the Stead flight pattern with landing gear down.

                                Sounded good on approach.

Was that some sort of systems check/test?
