Honestly, there are others that put forth much more of an effort than I do who deserve to be at those pylons. I do a pretty decent job of taking pictures of airplanes from the pits. But, I leave it to others to capture candid shots that tell a story of pilots and crew in action, others who take fantastic exposures at dawn or dusk that highlight the beauty of the Reno environs contrasted against these powerful machines, others who wait all day in one spot to finally get that shot that has eluded them for years.

So let's see more of your (everyone's) shots. Let's see shots from the pylons. Let's see pit action. Let's see dawn patrol. Let's see sunset skies.

            Bill,

Where did you take that shot of Andrew in the #30 Stihl plane?

            Nice light and angle.

I'm guessing inside the VOS somewhere?

Thanks! Everything was from the pits. I can't say exactly where because I'm not sure. It all depended on what was sitting (in the way) on the ramp. I was typically in the Unlimited pit area, between Blondie (Sparky) and Sawbones depending on ramp obstructions. Sometimes I was further west in the first row or two of the T-6s.

The picture of 47 and 44 in a seemingly formation takeoff has a very simple explanation. Both aircraft are turbo charged. However, for some reason the pilot of 47 was only using 29" of manifold pressure and the pilot of 44 was using his normal takeoff manifold pressure of 38". Because of the power differential, 44 accelerated much faster than 47. But it did make for an interesting takeoff.

Ok I have a visual now. West take off, nice profile of the wing and such.

Suprised no one here mentioned the R/H MLG hanging out in the wind on #39, that sort of thing can not only slow a plane down but could have other effects as well.

I was going to bring that and another issue up in a different thread. But, no time like the present.

Things on Race 39 look pretty good at takeoff. There may be a slight gap between the doors. But the right gear certainly appears to be coming out under G.

The other issue may be more of a lack of understanding on my part. On Race 30, the rear part of both gear doors appears to not be flush with the wing. It seems worse on the left side. I am not sure if the doors are just designed this way because of clearance, or if they just do not follow the exact contour of the wing, or if the are pulling out a bit. The front and sides look fine.

By Edit: I found an image of Race 30 right after take off that appears to show the rear edge of the gear doors flush with the wing. So, they may be pulling out slightly at speed / under load. I cannot say for certain.

On my way out of the pits on Saturday, Arrival Saturday, I saw Pete hanging the boards on the NAG Shack. I talked him into letting me help. I ended up taking over and using Pete as an assistant.
