  • New class of racers?

SubSonix site is stating that their jet has been approved for racing at Reno. Did anyone see their demo at PRS?

Sounds cool! I heard great reviews of the jet from those who flew it at PRS. Curious to see what this "class" could be. Also sticking out was the comment, "Pete will be racing in this year’s National Championship Air Races in the Jet Class and Sport Class. We expect championships in both!"

Does Pete have an actual Super Legacy? I thought it was just a rumor... N105PZ?

It was a good demo, though he was NORDO for a bit and that's cause for concern when you're attempting to launch the next class. Obviously, the a/c is pretty small so flying on the Outer Course means they tend to disappear between Outer 4 and the Valley of Speed. Not sure what the speeds may be or the associated G-loads but perhaps some consideration that they transition to run on the Sport or Middle course to keep them more visible to the crowd-line. Good show though...

Certainly welcome new blood in the sport. Was fun to watch and hope it works out for all concerned.

glad to see a new class, they look like jet IF-1s. I would love love love to see turbo prop sports on the big course. Maybe 450mph speeds? faster? thoughts?

They could easily run the T6 course, possibly even the F1 course. Vne is 280, cruise at 230-240. They are slow.

Thanks, Race. As I suspected. I didn't put a clock on him but strictly from a visual perspective it seems they'd be a good fit for the Middle Pylon (T-6) course. Hope it works out.

              https://www.sonexaircraft.com/
First of all this appears to be a marketing tool by Sonex more than anything else. There was 1 plane and 1 pilot that flew the course.

There are quite a few issues that would have to be resolved before there could be enough aircraft to even field enough planes to race.

A new race class would have to be approved by the FAA and RARA. Then each new pilot would have to attend Rookie School. But before that there would have to be several new SubSonix aircraft build and then have their owners allow their participation. Just because someone has a SubSonix doesn't mean he wants to race.

Would modifications to SubSonix racers be allowed? Would the class be limited to SubSonix or would BD-5 jets be allowed to compete?

Would the Medallion Sport Class racers have to be eliminated because of RARA time constraints?

              Just some thoughts.

They brought the one jet to get RARA and FAA aproval. That was accomplished. It would be a spec class, so no modifications, and no other types of jets. As you said, it is basically marketing for Sonnex.

I think the IF-1 silver and gold would beat them.....

Gold for sure, probably top half of the silver.
