Also Andy sent me the data for the augmenters.
exhaust temp at the exit dropped from 1300F to 600F, the belly temps dropped from 170F to 140F, and the pressure difference across the high and low pressure areas increased by 2 inH2O. So we are getting suction from the exhaust to help pull more air through the engine. This is great, because it is possible for air to spill out of the inlets (even to the point where air will enter the inlet, turn around and come back out). That's a ton of drag and hurts cooling.
Looks stealthy. Got any radar cross section data?

I don’t have any radar data. As for what makes something stealthy that’s way above my pay grade (and I’m omay eith it staying that way )

It's August, AKA one month of going to work, then the airport, sleeping a little, and repeat.

Race 30 got some flight testing in along with an air to air photoshoot. All paint and sponsors are under the clear coat to keep things smooth.

            I like.

The tail and #30 design looks awesome and so does the Stihl on the bottom.

            Thanks for keeping us current.

            See ya soon.

Side note is that the same Blackworks prop? I thought a new one was happening?

                Re: Hunting for microknots

So the weird thing with flap hinges is they were a ton of work. But aren't necessarily going to help us go faster than last year. Because we have been removing the flap hinges and bolting them back in place with some custom brackets. We did smooth the airfoil and removed the cusp on the bottom surface, but I think the main benefit is we will save 20 total man hours taking the flaps on and off at the beginning and end of race week.

That's still last year's propeller. New propeller will likely have the same geometry though so there probably won't be a visible difference.

Also managed to get my wife involved and she has revamped the team website.

                  Nice interview with ars Technica.

New prop is on, and working to get some flight testing in with all the systems working at race power. 9 days till plane leaves...

I bet you are hearing "are we there yet"

I am starting to hear the occasional racer flying around already

Yup. It’s one of my favorite things. Two weeks before the races, my ears are always on full blast.

To any pilots coming in in the next few days, watch out for burning man traffic. Two helicopters running back and forth between The Blackrock and Reno all day long. To anybody coming in in any mode of transport this weekend, watch out for Burners on the road. They’re easy to spot. They’re 100% covered in dust. Diving some crazy jalopy motorhome with bicycles strapped to the back or roof. All 100% covered in dust. They’re also only a couple hours back into reality.

You kidding? I'm thinking what I would give to have one more week. Been working year round on this thing the last 2-3 years and there's still never enough time.

I tend to wander quite a bit (well depends on how much we have to do) so I can watch all the other classes, but I shouldn't be that hard to find. Come by the pit and ask for "younger" Thomas. See you there.

Augmenters MK2.5 are done. Not sure if we will get a measurable performance bump out of them, but all the research says it can't hurt, and they look even cooler than before.
And finally a sneak peak at our secret weapon.

Always kind of a surreal experience, when the speed mod season ends and we actually get to go race. But the plane is the best it has ever been so we're all excited to see what it will do. Plane should be in Reno in the next two days.

Well it’s flown several times this way so I guess the secret is out.
We spent 8 months designing some faster wingtips. Cut 1 foot off each wing because when we did the math we. Found we didn’t need it. Predicting 5 more mph from the reduced drag. Come visit us in the pits to check it out.

Write up on the wingtips has been published.
Introduction During the 2017 National Championship Air Races, team One Moment was pitted opposite Kevin Eldridge’s NXT “Relentless”. This meant we had the whole week to observe the sleek airframe. The wingtips in particular, have always caught my eye. The pointed shape is designed to reduce the drag caused by wingtip vortices.
