  • Converting old film to a DVD

I had a neighbor that flew the Navy Kingfisher in WWII. I have a bunch of his old training films. 1" wide film.

Is it possible to have these converted to a DVD?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

I had a friend in California that had a number of films put onto a DVD but he said it was fairly expensive. Around $25 per role.

Thanks, these look very cool, I think it would be worth it.

Do you know where he took them?

Check Costco. I know they do 8mm, super8 and 16mm.

Denevi Digital in Hayward does conversion, they have a website.

Did some checking on the 1" film and it looks like "Type C" don't think Costco or Denevi does this type but if you search for this type there are places that will convert this type, please share who you go with.

I've copied some of my dad's old super 8 movies, (of course I have his old projectors) and set up the screen and my Hi-8 video camera on a tripod. I experimented a bit with placement and lighting, they came out really well, the recording captured the sound of the project and we were able to add some commentary, turned out very well.

Then it was a simple process to copy the analog video to digital via Apple iMovie.

I suspect stores like Costco only deal with common film standards. You'll need to do some research. Try searching for terms like "film to DVD conversion" on Google. Ignore any chain stores you've ever heard of, and start calling obscure scanning specialists. Someone out there can do it, but as previously stated, it won't be cheap, and depending on your film stock (35mm ?), it may require some digging.
                  No pixels were harmed, honest.
