Default New Motorsports Hall of Fame Museum includes air racing exhibit

A new motorsports museum is opening in a few weeks at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. The museum honors motorsports heroes from all forms of motorsports including air racing. Air racing honorees include Roscoe Turner, Jimmy Doolittle, Lyle Shelton, Steve Wittman, Tony LeVier, Cook Cleland and others. A variety of racing vehicles are on display at the museum. Air racing is represented by Formula V raceplane #77 “Blueberry” which participated in 30 FV air races throughout the eastern and central USA from 1978 through 1999. “Blueberry” holds the distinction of having competed in more FV air racing events than any other FV raceplane, including two races at Daytona Beach FL in 1989 and 1990. The new museum expects to attract over 100,000 visitors each year.

You'll notice in their artist's conceptual drawing of the museum that they had a P51 in mind for the air racing display - however who is going to donate a half-million dollar P51? They were happy to have "Blueberry" because it was smaller and lighter and very colorful. I had retired "Blueberry" because I was starting to build the first prototype second-generation FV raceplane. Due to the after effects of the Sept. 11th terrorist attack, this new raceplane was never completed, and FV suspended operations after losing usage of their PRS training airport in Indiana.
