  • Open Letter - if RARA is listening.

Spurring of the post about the new concerts..

I believe this will be my 22nd year in attendance of the races. Many of you folks here have been coming going much longer than that! I believe there's some very elementary things, which could greatly benefit the event. With minimal overhead cost.

We all talk about prize money. Well, there must be a better gross income from the event first. Period. So..here's a few ways of doing that, over a 2-3 year time-frame. These are low-cost things, that would make big differences.

    1.) R&R
There needs to be large convenience areas set-up, with free water, coffee, shade, and even places to kick back and rest. If they need to haul in a few acres of turf, and set-up a lounge.. then do it. The cost of this alone would be pennies, compared to the benefits. Let's face it, a whole day in the sun out there might be wonderful to us die-hard's, but newbies, ladies, and kids .. it can tend to be tough. Considering what it takes to hydrate a small family for the day; it currently would cost a small fortune.. The fans would greatly appreciate having at least a incy bit of luxury.

This needs to be a place where the moms and kids can hang-out for a few hours, plug in their phones, surf wifi, have a drink, eat their lunch (from one of the food stands) and relax. Some of the vendors would even benefit from this. It's a win-win. At Oshkosh there's shades around every corner. Why not at Reno? If the wife and kids are 'done' after the first day or two, they are going to hang out at the hotel the rest of the week, and or maybe not even come back the next year.

    2.) Pits, Entrance, and Parking
The admission needs to be all-inclusive. Even if the overall price went up. Pit passes, General Passes.. yada, yada. If someone buys in, they should get to see the planes up close. And enter from any entrance. West gate including. There needs to be big signs for the newbies... - SPORT CLASS THIS WAY, FORMULA THAT WAY.. Catch my drift? A lot of people in attendance during the weekend have no idea where to go see these planes up close. Aside from a little map in the program. They might arrive after the morning races, and not have any familiarity with the smaller classes at all. Why not introduce the crowds to the other classes better? Maybe there would be a bigger turnout in the morning. Which works well for everybody. Parking needs to be free, all around stead. if RARA needs to buy-off some of the lot-owners during race-reek, so be it. The customer shouldn't pay to park in the middle of the desert.

    3.) Free trolly's
Going to / from the GA gate, and through the pits all the way to the west gate. There should be two of them running constantly. With more vendors setting up shop on the west end.

Let's face it. For the average airshow person. Reno is work. It takes work to walk the pits.. it's blazing hot, or freezing cold. It's windy. It's dry. There's not much to do for relief. The whole experience needs to be revived to encourage the new attendee to stay awhile. Enjoy. And come back..

    I like this letter. +1

It can be murder inside. Us lifers have our program figured out and we cope. I know my kids can't survive a whole day in there. By 2:00 they just want to go home. Isn't that the opposite of what we want the kids to want? Then you have to make the god awful walk back to car. It sucks out loud. I have RARA license plates. Anybody know where that special parking lot is?Talk about BS. Meanwhile there are near empty parking lots right outside the main gate that are reserved for people who apparently could give a crap about the races. Otherwise, they would be full. Few things about the races upset me more than parking. It absolutely terrible. At least run some type of shuttles to the lots. Take care of the fans and they will take care of you. Has anyone ever heard of anybody saying,"The experience inside was so awesome. They totally take care of you. You have to go check it out!"
You'll get your chance, smart guy!

Trying to run a trolly / tram from the GA gate to the pit gate would be all but impossible. WAY too many people walking through that area. It's bad enough for the ones that run from the pit gate back down to the F1 / Bipe hangar.

It could be done. The crowd at OSH is massive by comparison, and we all manage to get out of the trolleys way as they constantly run around the grounds. OSH does have plenty of shade since we can actually grow grass and trees in Wisconsin, but they have very little water. Only a few fountains spread way apart, if you want water you bring your own like I do, or buy it.

As for parking, at OSH unless you get there early in the morning like I do, its a LONG!! walk to get in, and walk to either end. Warbirds on one end, classics and ultralights on the other.

Re: Open Letter - if RARA is listening.

Ya Fence, I know where it is. I have those plates also. Used to be right by the gate, now its the farthest, 10$ lot out there. If you come in early, you walk because the shuttle is not running until after the gates open. It was once something special for the extra you pay each year but not anymore. Oh well don't mean to sound entitled.
I've never really thought much about being uncomfortable out there. I am, but after all these years I have grown used to it, accept it and prepare as best I can for it. I agree though that it is the one thing most people I run across dislike about the races.
Parking could be better, but is really not any worse than most large events. Try getting out on any stadium after a game.

Re: Open Letter - if RARA is listening.

Why couldn't they run an "express" trolley up and down Alpha from the main gate to the west gate?

Re: Open Letter - if RARA is listening.

Couldn't they mark off an area behind the concessions for a trolley lane. There's fewer people in that area. They have trolleys at Oshkosh.
These are all good suggestions...............but the number one item in my opinion that needs to be addressed in prize money.
Prize money will bring the planes and the people will follow. Years ago, casinos would sponsor various races. With all the money brought in by the races, I'm surprised their isn't better backing by the casinos,
Go to other events and you see Coke, Pepsi, Budweiser, Coors, etc etc.
My understanding the new head of RARA worked for Coke, perhaps he has the insight on how to increase sponsorship at the races.

                  Leo-

In all honesty, I do feel entitled. I know that's probably not going to win me any popularity contests but, at least I'm honest. I've been supporting the races all my life, monetarily as long as I've had a job. I'm more than a casual fan and my license plate says so. Obviously I'm not the only one. For them to stuff us, the staunchest of supporters out in BFE really sticks in my craw.

Oh, I agree with you! I got really p.o.'d when they moved me out there. Kinda like a "yeah, you bought the plate and we promised you free parking, so, enjoy". It was all about the money as they can charge a fortune for where they used to let us park. But then I've only been going for 40 years, so what do I know!
I've made other arrangements the last few years.

A tram would be great but I can tell you that a "tram only" lane would not last long. See a way around the crowd, legal or not, and most will take it. And when the tram comes they will not get out of the way...

Then there is the area by the section 3 stands, they'd need a stop sign or crossing guards for the traffic to the beer stands

Re: Open Letter - if RARA is listening.

If fan attendance went up 20% the year after these implementations, and another 30% the year after that, that would be 50% greater overall compared to last year, by Reno 2018. At Which point more vendors would pay attention, as well as sponsors, and naturally a bigger purse would begin to ensue. By 2020, it could be a completely different ball-game. I'm no marketing strategist. But c'mon RARA. Isn't this stuff common sense?

I like to come out early and get breakfast and watch the F1 guy's.

I have box seats, would it be possible to allow box seat holders to enter earlier? We (box seat holders) are not competing for spaces in the general grandstands.

                            My 2 cents worth.

The main point here for me is a place to sit and some shade. Those two items (outside the boxes and bleachers) are fundamental. Once you're in the pits, you're cooked.

Giving away free water is problematic, it takes profit from the vendors, many of whom are trying to support their own local groups and activities.

And speaking of the boxes, where are the pretty girls selling beer. I know it's sexist, but how better on a hot afternoon to separate your average doofus from his money. It always worked with me.
