Re: Which Mustang prop is better for racing?

The cuff increases blade area which increases power converted to thrust at high speed. once the tip gets draggy enough, due to shock induced separation, the thrust drops off with increased power. Since the engines now are producing more power than the props can handle at race speeds, the cuff provides a way of converting that excess power to thrust. This effect is more responsible for the higher speeds than any ram effect because delta V across the prop disk is very small at high speed.

I'd say the one that Dago Red, Strega and Voodo run........they go fast

But now that the big power comes from a -9 blower and Allison rods the RPM has to stay lower (the -9 blower draws more horsepower and develops more boost than the engine can survive at higher RPM) and the Hamilton-Standard cuffed prop works best. A Mustang hasn't won without wearing a H-S "cuffed" prop in some form or another for many, many years- not since a Mustang OTHER than Dago Red, Strega, or Voodoo won anyway. Strega's "modified" prop came about because of a runway encounter, but worked very well and has now been (sorta...maybe?) duplicated on Voodoo. Aerodynamically, I couldn't begin to tell you why its better than the H-S cuffless "paddle" blades on most stockers, but I've heard it claimed that the cuff increases pressure at the air inlet a bit and helps build boost with less load on the blower drive.
Oh MAN!!! Engine-porn! Love this stuff. Really interested in the tech side of the racing game
