  • Which Mustang prop is better for racing?

The rounded tipped cuffed, or the chisel tipped non-cuffed? I think the chisel tipped prop looks better, but that doesn't mean anything performance wise...

The best one for racing is whichever one goes fastest...

Which is better for racing? Some years it's the one on Strega. Other years the one on Voodoo seems faster. One Saturday couple years ago it was really hard to tell...

The cuffed prop helps increase manifold pressure.

The more blades the better. PM wins!

In '84, Stiletto's T-28 paddle blades were the fastest . I miss that plane

Probably need a more specific question. Even then, its a very broad topic.

One year, '82~'83??, Bill Whittington ran a 5 blade prop on their P-51H.

I would say modified cuffed prop like Strega has, but Dago went faster with a standard cuffed prop.

                        On a larger course.

Don't forget that "Dago Red" was designed & built by "Tiger" & his old team. "Tiger" & his old team have had a hand in most of the fast Mustangs. "Dago Red", "Voodoo" & "Strega".

Way I've always heard it told:

The T-28 blades (Stiletto) worked well with the higher-RPM, Merlin rod, -7 blower engines. But now that the big power comes from a -9 blower and Allison rods the RPM has to stay lower (the -9 blower draws more horsepower and develops more boost than the engine can survive at higher RPM) and the Hamilton-Standard cuffed prop works best. A Mustang hasn't won without wearing a H-S "cuffed" prop in some form or another for many, many years- not since a Mustang OTHER than Dago Red, Strega, or Voodoo won anyway. Strega's "modified" prop came about because of a runway encounter, but worked very well and has now been (sorta...maybe?) duplicated on Voodoo. Aerodynamically, I couldn't begin to tell you why its better than the H-S cuffless "paddle" blades on most stockers, but I've heard it claimed that the cuff increases pressure at the air inlet a bit and helps build boost with less load on the blower drive.

Is that a function of improved RAM Air Intake?
