I am curious why they wouldn't switch to the back up engine, or maybe that one had the same ring package?

With the boost levels they run, ring condition has very little effect on power generated so you won't recognize ring issues other than by measuring crankcase pressure to determine blow-by or seeing oil being burnt in the exhaust as well as spark plug inspection.

We've set world records with a car that had cranking compression down to 80psi in two cylinders while the rest were fine.

I think voodoo has better engine management.
