      Thanks for making my day.
I've been out there a bit and following the progress of some racers, but most of them want no news out, so I respect their privacy.
Of course when they say OK like this, then...

The propeller is just a wing, after all. Maybe the pitch angle is high enough that sanding helps keep the flow attached?

I know the finish on Rutan's Catbird is a slightly rough cross hatching, on the fuselage, amnesty

What you wanna bet they sand the prop chordwise and not spanwise??

What do you think a Q-tip prop does? Keeps the air from sliding off the tip!!

All my smartazz answers are in REAL general terms, by the way...

            Leo,

When I walk up to the hanger, I always ask "is it ok if I take pictures?

Most always they say "go for it".

About 20 minutes ago I heard the Bear fire up. There is definatey a different tone from the prop?

We'll see once he get airborne.

Been shut off for a while.

              Keep you posted.

The just completed a short 10 minute flight. Once airborne he had his usual deep sound.

Sorry not the best shots using a 300mm lense to pull in from altitude.

Is that a myth or has that/can that be measured?

If Toldjaso sez it is so then it is fact.

Has the 3-blade been so quickly forgotten? It was very shiny in my recollection. The sound was awesome.

Friction is always bad... unless it enables something with a bigger effect that offsets the badness. A perfectly slick prop would be ideal, unless there's less flow separation if you add a little surface roughness.

Fluid dynamics is hard. That's why I'm an EE. :-p

The three blade prop beat the hell out of Rare Bear's airframe and was a prime candidate to induce control surface flutter. Galloping Ghost showed us what happens with flutter, as did Miss Ashley II. And a few other ones, who were lucky enough to live to talk about it. The motocrosser (forget his name- Mark Hanna was it?- in a P-51?), Miss America P-51 (rudder tab?), Matt Jackson (was it in VooDoo, or some other P-51?).
I am not sure if I remembered all of those correctly, fellers, feel free to add comments about any of my posts. This is just a hobby that I have very little time to comment on and enjoy.
