All valid points. I think the lesson here is that 500+ speeds require motor first, airframe 2nd.

Actually, its the other way 'round. The best airframe you can have makes for less overall stress on the engine to achieve the same results.

The point is, you clean up the airframe so that big engine package doesn't have to work so hard.

This discussion reminds me of RidgeRunner (don't remember the year). That airframe has had a bunch of clean ups done to it and that one year had a race motor...it turned some heads if I remember

GG appeared to be pretty damn fast with "stock" power.

I would take actual data over how it "appeared" to your eyes.

Agreed!
Drag and weight reduction will always have more benefit than required horsepower to overcome that drag.
Horsepower typically requires much more complexity. For example, getting the horsepower from the engine into the air. Gear reduction, prop control, prop blades, etc.
