Did the pilot come back to Races the next year? after that excitement.
Yes, it was rookie Earl Ketchen. He came back and raced that same Mustang for Don Davis' "Tired Iron Racing Team" at Reno '82 and '83, as well as Moosejaw '84. Was killed a couple weeks after the Moosejaw race when he and a passenger stalled out at the top of a low-level loop and spun in. The Mustang was destroyed.

That same aircraft had previously been raced by Scott Smith at Reno '78 and Miami '79, and by Bill Whittington at Reno '80.

As I recall, the incident in the photo had to do with a broken prop linkage or something of the sort....and there were fuel trucks and aircraft being fueled all over the ramp. Very scary moment.

Thanks for posting that, Mark. I've been meaning to mention Bucky's excellent article. Good pictures, too.

All this nostalgia might motivate me to dig out my slide stash and start scanning.
This thread did get me to find my old airshow binder so I could post this picture.

I've been trying to track down one of their patches like that for 30 years.

                Okay.
This was on the tail of "GeGe II", raced by Scott Smith, at Miami '79.

Was that the Pony's only race?
