What's venting near or off the right aileron?

ADI tank vent... meaning Tiger is flying a bit off "ball center". This is assuming that this is a shot with Tige flying... I've noticed this over the years and wondered if it's not a bit of "secret $hit"....

I've asked Tiger about this while in the pits, and he just kinda shrugged it off. What else could I expect. LOL.

So, we all know keeping the ball centered is the most efficient way around a corner..... right?

I always heard the ADI overflow was a question of keeping the ball centered too.

Tiger was indeed flying when I shot that from the hillside last year. All I know is that there was a lot of fluid being vented/released/sprayed during the Saturday race.

We've had this discussion here before, I believe, I'd have to search the archives. I've asked several pilots, both race and "regular" about this and have gotten a nod or two... I wonder if there's something happening here where Tiger has learned that ignoring THE ball and going with *ahem* HIS BALLS might make the airplane go between a given distance faster...

That "old farmer" is awfully damned smart when it comes to machines, he feels them in his ass.. Much like a young pilot he had a close, but controversial race with last year..

I still contend that the Hinton's are born with 750 hours and a complex rating!

The caps tend to leak a bit when topped all the way off.

Ball out of center causes the venting of fluids. This can occur for a split second in turbulence and then it takes a while to empty the vent line. I can assure you Tiger does not fly the plane out of trim.

Why the boil off people. Dago, still the fastest Mustang around the sticks flew just fine with that scoop hanging into the breeze.

They are not doing boil off, but since we are on the subject "why boil off" . Boiling the plane would eliminate the drag of the scoop. Now I know there is a belief that North American designed the scoop and that it eliminated the cooling drag of the scoop by expanding the air across the radiator creating thrust out if the aft end. They apparently accomplished this feat however it doesn't not eliminate the drag of the scoop hanging under the aircraft. So!!!! Boiler means less drag more speed. This is not new news or rocket science. It is just very expensive. So why boiler? It's called innovation. Voodoo is doing wing angle change to copy Strega's successful formula best they can. They are copying Dago scoop because that is believed to be the lowest drag unit out there. No one wants to spend anymore money than they have to to win. Big time unlimited racing has no mega dollar sponsorships to help with the costs to modify these planes. So the owners digg into their own pockets and do what they can.

                          Re: Voodoo in pieces...

well, this means... with zero deg prop/thrust line, zero deg wing incidence and Dago-type scoop Voodoo in future has best aerodynamics at reasonable costs, right?

Matt, is it possible to explain differences between Dago and Strega scoop and/or cooling system?

                          thx

                            Re: Voodoo in pieces...

I made a picture collage of the top mustangs so it would make for an easier comparison. The outwardly differences are obvious - but the real magic for the Dago scoop is on inside guys. Personally I thinks it's pretty unrealistic to think Dago will ever be rebuilt as a racer, and her secrets should not be lost just because she is. I like the idea of the scoop mod for Voodoo.

I'm kinda torn on the wing incidence mod though. Someone once told me that is why Tiger/Strega slip in the corners (hard to keep the ball centered) - and the Dago went fast enough without it. Regardless... I'm sure someone will correct me if I was misinformed and it doesn't really matter one way or the other. I just think it's great to see a committed owner & crew working on making Voodoo all she can be. That don't come cheap OR easy.

Anyway - enough of my ramblings... pics are better.

Iīve read about this and scratching my head. I hope someone can explain me in detail how it is. I was learned that the -51 was a long range fighter, to scort the bombers and so on... I think that the engineers found the best wing position to do it, to cope with drag. I believe they used all the resourses to accomplish that, or not? so thatīs the point of my question. Do Voodoo people made wind tunnel or computational essays?.

They are not doing the change with the goal of a better bomber escort.
