There were only two turbine powered P-51 airframes built. Cavalier mounted a Rolls Royce Dart on N6167U. It was a concept demonstrator called the Turbo Mustang III. In 1971 it was dismantled. A joint-venture between Cavalier and Piper produced two Lycoming T-55 powered Turbo Mustang/Enforcers in 1972 (N201PE and N202PE). N6167U was reregistered as N201PE and was unsuccessfully used to demonstrate the aircraft to the government. No contract was gained from this. N201PE was put in storage (last I recall it was with Gordon Plaskett, but that was 30 years ago). N202PE was destroyed in a crash due to trim tab flutter.
In the early '80's Piper produced an updated version of the Enforcer called the PA-48. Two PA-48's were built. While resembling a modified Mustang, neither were actual P-51's, being larger and slightly different shape in fuselage length and wing area, but they did utilize a minimal amount of off-the-shelf Mustang parts. After another unsuccessful attempt to sell to the government, the PA-48's were retired. One to the USAF Museum in Datyon, the other at the Edwards AFB Flight Test Museum.
Murdo Cameron built the Grand P-51 out of composites several years ago and mounted a smaller T-53 turbine on it. But this is in no way, shape, or form an actual P-51 either.
Five possible airframes. Only two of them actual P-51's. Only one remaining in long-term storage.
Unlimited Class rules also state that aircraft must be piston powered.Comment

Here's the Edwards 'Enforcer'. They just painted it for static display. I was in the same hanger they were using, as a GI.
