Maybe the qualifying motor is also the backup race motor. So save when you can.

My Stepdad was at Reno '78 when Steve Sr won with the "Red Baron" and he said he asked Steve how much manifold pressure he was pulling and Steve smiled and said "just enough to win"... Stevo seen what he needed to do - so he did just enough to be in 1st... Like last year when everyone was saying that Strega was closing fast on Voodoo but ran out of laps - my guess would be Stevo would have had more throttle if he needed it...
