  • Young Steve Hinton...

    Gotcha, didn't I...

This should be of interest to anybody who knows the Hinton family. It was a long time ago.

Anybody care to guess what the occasion was? Several clues here...

I believe it was the first time Steve Hinton Sr. won the Unlimited Gold in the Red Baron. That is his wife Karen to his left.

There are a couple clues here...one being the trophy. The other one is pretty much a dead giveaway...once you see that it's right under your nose.

That's not exactly her nose, Brad...

Maybe I was talking about Steve......and when you see it, you'll know.

              Miami, 1979.

The Race Queen's sash says "Intl", and you can see "AT" on Steve's shirt. Howie Keefe's book has a picture of the '79 Miami poster with the same typeface: "INTERNATIONAL Air Race and Show." That's not the Reno trophy; Steve won Miami that year in the Red Baron.

Bingo! Well done -- I hadn't even noticed the T shirt.

That had been a hard fought Race -- I think Steve finished at about 415 mph on a really short course, compared to Reno. Steve had had a workout. So at that time Steve had won a Reno, crewed for Darryl in the same airplane, won Mojave and now Miami.

Not many Racers have ever dominated so intensely for what seemed such a long time as did The Red Baron. The strange part is that it was less than 3 years. But what a 3 years.

The Miami logo is also on Karen's Participant badge.

You know I tried to read the badge and totally missed the logo, which has a nice outline of Florida on it. =)

That was the last race with the old upper engine cowling I believe. From Mohave onward it had the new style that Pete Law sketched out ..

The old Upper cowl is still hanging in the old Hangar office..

Now that is a neat picture. Thank you Shawn.
