As has been mentioned in other posts, besides Hoot's awesome flying the first few laps in 232, Smoot and Czechmate were the highlight of the race! Just wish the announcers had realized what a big deal it was when Czechmate passed the Bear! Wake up guys!

Yup. Smoot flew a GREAT race! Quietly but with authority marched the little Yak towards the front. Don't know if it's got the stuff to catch VooDoo, but it sure is in the mix of things. Today is gonna be great.

It can't catch VooDoo, but VooDoo will have to cash in a LOT of heart beats to keep Strega behind it.

Strega's mill is closer to being on life support. Kerch has been doling out the power settings in such a way to keep things on track for today.

Obviously Mike N builds a great engine, but Matt has had to run her harder than anyone expected and he'll have a long path around the other racers before he even catches sight of Jr.

Not to take anything away from "The Giant Killer", but the little Yak was right where it should have been. Passing the Bear was more about a team falling on their face than any great feat by the other one passing...

The little Yak was smoking. What were its lap speeds?

The big nose on a tiny plane reminds me of a slender woman with large breast implants. Out of proportions that catch the eyes.

Smoot flew a great couple of races. His average for the Gold was a little over 455, not bad but almost 30 slower than Steve-o and Matt.

Certainly the Bear was not up to expectations, but it was still a racing pass and it had to be nice to make that pass after a couple years away.... A 2nd and a 3rd is pretty darn impressive with the field that raced in the Gold this year... I for one still think the feat was not only impressive, but a definite crowd favorite highlight on Saturday as the mass of well wishers waiting to give enthusiastic pats on Shermans back attest to...Others failures do not reduce the accomplishment in my eyes....thanks guys for a fun year and thanks and congrats to ALL for another fantastic week!

Agree! That little Yak was hauling the mail all week. Great job Team Czech Mate!!

What a disappointment with Bear! The move to Texas, the huge crew, big budget, same story! A crew member was talking about getting a new motor next year. What about this year? You would think they would have put time into tearing down the existing engine, especially when they suspected it was hurt from last years over heating. No cross country flight, no Reno far from home hanger to limit development excuse. Just don't understand why they can't make it go. Too bad the team can't reach out to Cornell and come to an understanding. Dave could act as a consultant. Drop the egos! Work together to bring the Bear back to her glory days. This project is just too big for one man, one ego and history is proving this in a very humbling way to the detriment of the air racing community.

If Voodoo was flying at 480mph, and Czech Mate was flying at 450mph, how long in time and how many laps would it take for Voodoo to pass Czech Mate.

Geez man, doesn't matter how it happened but it did and there's no taking that away from Smoot and the team. Those guys were in front of Dreadnaught all week which was an awesome achievement. Add taking on and passing the Bear (who has always been a favorite of mine) is just icing on the cake. Give some credit where credit due. No need to rain on anyone's parade. Go Team Czech Mate!

No doubt. I was cheering and hooting along with everyone else on the fence when the pass happened right in front of us. It was a big deal. Even for us Bear fans!
