Re: Reno Air Races 2013 and Beyond
"Houghton said their sponsorship has doubled from the past."
Based on this statement I would say yes.
Watching the news last night it sure was nice to see a positive approach to reporting on the air races, great graphics and everyone was excited for the 50th event. As far as I'm concerned, the Reno Air Races have been our premiere event.

Re: Reno Air Races 2013 and Beyond
While several other events bring more to the local economy, $80 million is nothing to sneeze at. I kinda always hoped that at that future point when RARA announced it could not afford it anymore that the various business groups would step up, along with the major casinos, and help keep it going. THEY have the most to lose after all. Reno lost Safari Club this year, probably for good, and has competition for the bowling championships, both almost as big to the local economy as the Air Races.
Good for Breightling to step up! There IS a future.

Re: Reno Air Races 2013 and Beyond
Compared to most motorsports events the tickets are priced low. I know from talking to locals the reason for their not attending regularly is the overall cost. By the time you do tickets, pits, food, drink, parking, gas out there, trinkets and such for a family outing it gets VERY expensive. If you are not a real fan, i.e. a "daddy, can we go see the airplanes" casual visitor, once is about it. While much cheaper than say, a nascar race or pro game (neither of which we have here) it is a big investment when there are a lot of local street events that are virtually free.
Ya have to be a fan to appreciate the value!
If you look at it like that, most of the guests are from out of the area so their impact on the economy for food, rooms, gambling, etc. is proportionally large.

Re: Reno Air Races 2013 and Beyond
Thank you Breitling!
My wife and I have attended most of the races since '86. Most years we stay in town at a the Peppermill or DA's Nugget. We've rented a house at Kings Beach at Tahoe when we've had a large group of us going. 2011 we were in our RV at the West lot. Between travel expenses, lodging, tickets, souvenirs, food, and some gambling, the trip has cost us $3k-$4k each year. We usually show up several days early and do other things around Reno prior to race week.
See you all in September!Sky Critter

Re: Reno Air Races 2013 and Beyond
Just remember, it is a rumor...like 12 Spits being buried in the Catholic church lot at Stead or Amelia's wing spar being caught on sonar.....but if congress can give the FAA power over its own budjet to make the air traffic control system work, then they can let the Military run part of its show too.....but there is always hope that sanity will prevail... that congress will do the right thing.....(disclaimer: I believe in the tooth fairy too)

So I'll take the "glass is have full" mindset and buy anything that sounds realistic
September will be awesome.

Re: Reno Air Races 2013 and Beyond
Was that BBQ the multi-million dollar Howard Hughes TX special..
.. that took a decade & several redesigns to complete?
& can we be sure that THIS isn't an Earhart artefact?
