Re: With Bear on the Way to Texas - Lets Get Some Road Trip Shots

It sounds like its going to cost a fortune to move the bear by truck. I saw the note that years ago it cost $500 per day per Highway patrol car for the escort. At $1000+ per day for H.P escort alone, surely it would have been far cheaper to fly the thing to Texas. Sure, there would have been people needed to support it at every fuel stop, but it would only take 1 -2 days at most to get there. I wonder if its got another a really serious issue that hasn't been discussed that has made it non flightworthy? Sure, you need people to race the thing, but for a ferry flight? Surly it could be done with a minimal amount of experience on the plane.

    Just a thought.

Just my speculation, but I doubt the Bear can carry enough fluids for any sort of cross-country flight. With the boil off oil cooling system I presume a fair amount of fuel tank space was converted to carry water to replenish the boiler. Like gasoline, water for the boiler is a critical fluid; when it runs out, the Bear needs to be on the ground.

Considering FAA required reserves, flight duration (takeoff to touchdown) is probably less than 30 minutes.

These questions have been answered elsewhere under a few different threads, so in case you missed it.

        1. The Bear DOES NOT have any cooling issues. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it. As the Team Manger said "It's getting trucked to Texas to fix a problem that doesn't exist."

        2. The Bear carries more boil off water that fuel, and the fuel tank is stock. It could fly to NY, as long as you people staged in route that know how to service it. There in is why it's being trucked.

I was told the cost is $50,000.00.

All that being said, one man owns it, it is his do do what ever he likes. And I wish him nothing but the very best.

Why can't the crew unbolt the center section of the wing? Or is that part permanently fixed to the fuselage and impossible to remove?

Who said anything about cooling issues?

"Carries more boil off water than fuel" - No doubt, it may need more boil off water than fuel at race power.

I agree, it is Rod's airplane and he can do whatever he wants with it. Personally, I am a Bear fan and will continue to be whether it races again or not. I respect Rod very much for acquiring, restoring, and preserving his collection of aircraft and hope he continues in that effort.

Go back and read post #14. ".....figure out what the root issue was behind the over heating issues last year. I kinda get the feeling that the overheating issues were there before the races last year and the issue was never figured out. Either way, without the temp issues sorted out,.......

"No doubt, it may need more boil off water than fuel at race power."

The system was designed for adequate water at full race power. So on a cross country flight it's even less of an issue.

The owner of Rare Bear has a handful of other planes so he must have numerous full/part time staff/volunteers. Grab a handful and turn them lose. I'm sure they could figure it out.

So my question remains: Why can't the crew unbolt the center section of the wing? Or is that part permanently fixed to the fuselage and impossible to remove?
