  • No demo team for Reno 2013

With the schedules confirmed at ICAS this week, there will be no appearance by either the T-Birds, Blues or Snowbirds again this year. There is a VFA-122 Hornet demo scheduled.

The lack of a 'big name' demo team again must hurt the attendance figures next year.

Re: No demo team for Reno 2013

Thanks for posting. I've been checking the Thunderbird site everyday myself waiting for the 2013 schedule since they were the last hold out.

Well, that is indeed a bummer. For us, 50 years of Air Racing is a big accomplishment and should have been a big - big event one of the 3 teams that have participated frequently over the years coming here to help us celebrate :-(

With the RARA site very quiet and the fact there has been no news regarding the 2012 races, I has a sinking feeling in my gut that maybe we will not see a 50th? Sure hope I'm wrong.

I would rather see that as well personally. More warbirds and less over the top noise is what I think would make the air races better. Hard to work when you have all that racket going on. Not to mention that I would think that you could get 3-4 good acro acts for what the T-birds cost. The Franklin Flying Circus, Sean Tucker, and more stuff like that.

Anyone know what the current cost is for the major jet teams? The last numbers I saw were something like $10k per day plus fuel, lodging, transportation, and security.

Our present administration would just as soon cut the demo teams out altogether but we had funds to send Chavez money to drill for oil. No comment. Defense spending will get worse after Jan.1,2013. Back to simulator flying again.

What does it cost the taxpayer for 2 weeks in Hawaii for a 747 plus lodging ,food, security, etc.? Would you rather watch Air Force One do a few flybys or a military Demo Team? Enough for now.

I'm sorry for getting political on Military Demo Teams. I just don't understand we they always want to cut Defense/Military from the budget.

I think big Steve is more than a little busy with the Unlimited Pace/Safety flying he has to do.

So I would say pretty close to 25k-30k a day. The Blue Angel's required the city to close down hwy 395 and a full police escort to and from the venue. Damn I wonder what that cost RARA?! Yikes!!!

I too feel that Air Force One is logging a lot of hours and cycles that aren't "official government business".. but to bring this thing back on topic...

Could a 747 ever turn a 500 MPH lap on the unlimited course?

I would rather see mock dogfights between some P-40's and a Zero, P-51 vs. a FW190 and stuff like they do at Oshkosh. Ton's of pyro's, mock bomb drops, huge walls of fire for the 50th. People also pay to see that! Put more money in private owners pocket books. In short more warbird and GA acts!
